NSW forward Angus Crichton has ended months of speculation by agreeing to a two-year extension at the Sydney Roosters but his $1.6 million retention has been tempered by the departure of Sitili Tupouniua to the Bulldogs for the next four years.
Crichton, who’s resurgent form has made him a star of the State of Origin series, re-signed with the Roosters until the end of 2026, knocking back interest from several rival NRL clubs and overseas rugby.
It capped a remarkable turnaround for Crichton, who started the season in NSW Cup and was destined for French rugby union until he managed to reignite his club and representative career.
“I’m incredibly proud to continue my journey with the Sydney Roosters,” said Crichton.
“This team is like family to me, and so are the people within the club. There’s honestly nowhere else I’d rather be. I feel like I still have so much more to give, and I’m committed to continuing to bring my best and to playing my role for the team.”
Crichton was on his way out the door at the Roosters after becoming disgruntled when the club made a big-money play for Gold Coast star David Fifita.
Fifita agreed to join the club only to change his mind at the 11th hour, prompting the Roosters to re-open talks with Crichton.
It took some work, but coach Trent Robinson convinced him to stay after the club came to the party with a lucrative offer until the end of 2026.
“This is Angus’ sixth season as a Rooster, and he has openly spoken about what being part of this club and our community means to him,” Robinson said.
“I really value Gus as a player, and as a person, so I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him over the next few years.”
Crichton’s new deal meant Tupouniua was given the chance to speak to rival clubs and it is understood he has landed on a new home, having signed with the Bulldogs until the end of 2028.
Meanwhile, the bloodletting at the Newcastle Knights has begun after prop Daniel Saifiti was given permission to explore his options on the open market.
Saifiti has two years remaining on a deal that is believed to be worth in excess of $800,000 a season and has been told he is free to leave if he can find another club.
It is understood Jack Hetherington has also been given permission to leave if he finds another club while hooker Jayden Brailey is also believed to be free to explore his options.
Knights recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan only joined the club last week and it is understood he is keen to relieve some of the salary cap pressure that currently exists at the club. Newcastle have made a play for Blaize Talagi but it is understood they would need to move players next season to accommodate the teenager Parramatta star in their squad.
