Former Sharks captain Paul Gallen has blasted the NRL match review committee for hitting Cronulla fullback Will Kennedy with a potential two-match suspension for making contact with referee Adam Gee.
Kennedy was met with a grade two contrary conduct charge in the wake of the Sharks big win over the Wests Tigers on Friday night.
The incident unfolded as the Sharks fullback was looming in support of a break made by teammate Ronaldo Mulitalo.
Kennedy bowled Gee over with the referee quickly finding his feet.
Kennedy will miss one match with an early guilty-plea.
However, Gallen has slammed the charge as a “joke.”
“Some of the decisions being made these days are absolutely mind-boggling,‘’ Gallen said on 2GB radio.
“When I saw it (charge of Kennedy) this morning I thought, is this April Fools Day?
“Can you believe he has been charged for that?
“It’s absolutely insane. Some of the decisions in all areas of the game at the moment are just so questionable.
“That one for me, I can’t believe it.‘’
Gallen was asked why the responsibility wasn’t on Kennedy to avoid running into Gee?
“What player in the game, goes out on the field and thinks, I’m going to make contact with the referee,‘’ Gallen said.
“It’s called incidental contact. Things just happen in this game.
“There’s not a single player in the game who thinks where the referee is.
“The whole decision to charge him over that is crazy.‘’
