NRL 2022: Manly target Shane Flanagan, Laurie Daley to join Anthony Seibold | What’s the Buzz

While Anthony Seibold is set to be announced as the new Sea Eagles coach for 2023, Manly are still chasing another two big names.

The Manly Sea Eagles are chasing 2016 premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan as part of Anthony Seibold’s new coaching staff on the northern peninsula.

Flanagan is currently in England as coaching director of PNG at the rugby league World Cup but has had an initial approach in recent days following the sacking of Des Hasler.

It would give Manly a hugely experienced leadership with former Blues and Canberra Raiders star Laurie Daley also tipped to come on board in a senior consultancy role.

Flanagan already has enough work in list-management at the St George-Illawarra Dragons and in commentary roles at Fox Sports and 2GB, plus he’s helping out PNG.

He will speak to Manly in more detail when he returns home from England in three weeks.

The Manly job would be a full-time role which could restrict his media gigs.

However if the package is right, he’d be keen.

There is also the possibility of at least three head-coaching roles coming up next year.

Anthony Griffin at the Dragons, Adam O’Brien in Newcastle and Justin Holbrook on the Gold Coast all need to win to survive.

Flanagan would probably want some sort of get-out clause should one of those roles become available.

Earlier this year Flanagan made his thoughts clear on coaching when Trent Barrett was sacked at the Bulldogs.

“I’d love to do the job,” he said, “I want to get back into coaching at NRL level. I think I could do a good job there.”

The phone call from Phil Gould never came.
