NRL 2020: Latrell Mitchell free to face Panthers as Warriors hooker Wayde Egan hit with contrary conduct charge

While Latrell Mitchell has escaped censure for a high tackle, the player whose hands were rubbed across the face and near the eyes of the Souths fullback on Friday night has earned a stint on the sidelines.

Latrell Mitchell has been cleared by the NRL judiciary but Wayde Egan is facing a ban after being hit with a contrary conduct charge after his hands rubbed across the face of Mitchell.

Mitchell escaped charge for his high tackle on David Fusitu’a which left the Warriors winger ruled out of the rest of the game after failing a concussion test during South Sydney’s run-away 40-12 win on Friday night.

Mitchell was involved in an incident late in the game with Warriors hooker Egan. The South Sydney fullback reacted to a tackle by Egan. Replays showed Egan’s hands were rubbed across the face and near the eyes of Mitchell.

Egan was whacked with a grade two contrary conduct charge and will miss one game with an early guilty plea but will be suspended for two matches if he fights the charge and losses.

Penrith five-eighth Jarome Luai will not miss a game with an early guilty plea for a dangerous contact charge on Melbourne’s Felise Kaufusi.

Bad to worse: Double blow for battling Broncos

The under-fire Broncos have been dealt a double blow with forwards Pat Carrigan and Tom Flegler facing suspension following Thursday night’s shocking loss to Newcastle.

Carrigan and Flegler will miss Saturday week’s clash against the Titans at Suncorp Stadium if they enter early guilty pleas after being charged by the match review committee.

Carrigan was hit with a grade two dangerous contact charge for his late tackle on Knights halfback Mitchell Pearce in the 27-6 defeat.

The tackle on unsuspecting Pearce which Carrigan was sin-binned for was slammed as “cheap and dangerous” by Immortal Andrew Johns.

He will miss one game with an early guilty plea and faces a two-game suspension if he fights at the charge at the judiciary and loses.

Flegler is also facing a one-game ban for a dangerous contact charge involving Knights forward Sione Mata’utia.

Flegler will miss only one game regardless of whether he fights the charge and is found guilty or enters an early plea, which could encourage the Broncos to chance their hand at the judiciary.

The Broncos have lost four straight games since the NRL season resumed and the double suspension blow is another downer for coach Anthony Seibold, who is under enormous pressure to get Brisbane firing.
