Sports Editor-at-large Phil Rothfield reveals his highlights and lowlights from the weekend sporting action.

From shocking refereeing decisions, to bad blood between Joseph Suaalii’s manager and the Roosters, to Stuart Ayres’ shock election loss.

Read on for Buzz’s scoops and analysis.

HIGHLIGHT

Stuart Ayres losing his seat of Penrith in a state election bloodbath.

This is the man who committed more than $400 million to build a new stadium in his home seat but snubbed Manly, the Wests Tigers and Cronulla for desperately needed suburban ground funding.

LOWLIGHT

A shocking forward pass ruling that cost Manly and Tom Trbojevic a crucial try against the Rabbitohs. Rugby league is flying at the moment but there is no excuse for errors like this from the match officials. No doubt Manly will get the standard Graham Annesley apology on Monday afternoon.

SPOTTED

The AFL has a lot of catching up to do with the NRL in Queensland. The Friday night Broncos v Dolphins match rated 246,000 in Brisbane on Channel Nine. The Lions v Melbourne AFL game at the Gabba rated only 59,000 on Channel Seven – about one quarter of the NRL audience.

SPOTTED

Another delay to collective bargaining agreement talks – this time when a fire alarm went off at Racing NSW headquarters in Druitt Street on Friday where NRL bosses and the RLPA were meeting. Afterwards Peter V’landys and Clint Newton were seen climbing stairs to the seventh floor to resume their meeting.

SHOOSH

The Roosters are not at all dirty on Joseph Suaalii over his switch to rugby union. However it’s a different story with his agent Isaac Moses, who kept the Roosters in the dark about his talks with Rugby Australia for several months. Moses also manages front-rower Matt Lodge who is coming off contract. The discussions will be interesting.

SHOOSH

If Gold Coast Titans edge forward David Fifita is worth more than $1 million, what does that mean Manly’s Haumole Olakau’atu should be paid? I know who the better player is.

SLEEPY SEIBS

That Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold fell asleep in a McDonalds restaurant at 11pm is no reason to be outraged. On the scandal meter it’s about a one out of 10. On the comedy meter it’s a 9.

Catch you on NRL 360 at 6.30pm on Fox League with Braith Anasta, Paul Kent, Brent Read and Cooper Cronk to discuss all the big rugby league issues. There will also be a live cross to Cowboys coach Todd Payten.
