PHIL Rothfield’s highlights, lowlights and talking points from another memorable weekend in sport.
HIGHLIGHT
Friday night’s colossal Cowboys v Broncos game in Townsville. An absolutely sensational game of rugby league to rival last year’s grand final as a showpiece.
HIGHLIGHT II
The performance of referee Matt ‘Chicken Legs’ Cecchin in the Townsville blockbuster. He let the game flow and got all the big decisions right.

MONDAY BUZZ: NRL rejects have last laugh on former clubs
HIGHLIGHT III
The Swans joining GWS in the AFL grand final qualifiers. Wouldn’t Melbourne just hate having two Sydney teams in the grand final if they can win next weekend.
LOWLIGHT
Anyone who favours captain’s challenge in the NRL should check the Wests Tigers v Cowboys Holden Cup semi-final on Friday night. Replays clearly showed a Cowboys try should have been disallowed when a player put his foot into touch and grounded the ball on the sideline.
The referee was powerless to overturn the touch judge’s blatant mistake because the Tigers had already used their one challenge for the half.
BLIND DATES
The people who produced the official 2017 NRL calendars obviously don’t follow the game closely. We spotted the Wests Tigers calendar in a newsagent over the weekend with a giant picture of Robbie Farah on the front.
SPOTTED
Suspended Sydney Roosters boss Peter O’Sullivan in Canberra on Saturday watching his Holden Cup team beat the Cronulla Sharks.
SHOOSH
Which rugby league media personality drank far too much red wine while watching Raiders v Panthers on Saturday night judging by the tone and language in his text messages?
BLOOPER REEL
Seriously, what is going on at Channel Nine? On Sunday the network was promoting Storm v Panthers instead of Storm v Raiders. They also had both NRL preliminary finals on the wrong days. Gibber, gibber, gibber.
