LOWLIGHT
The sad passing of former Wests Tigers, NSWRL and ARL chairman John Chalk. He was an old plumber by trade but could mix as comfortably with politicians and the big end of town.
BLOOD IN WATER
There is drama at the Sharks with the non-appearance of chairman Dino Mezzatesta at Saturday night’s game against the Rabbitohs. Mezzatesta says he was at his mum’s birthday but others suggest there has been a fallout with directors over the future direction of the club and he is set to walk away.
SHOOSH
At last the NRL is doing something about the match review committee. There is strong mail out of Moore Park headquarters that former referee Steve Clark will replace Michael Buettner as the boss.
SPOTTED
Former NRL media boss Peter Grimshaw at the Sharks Leagues Club. Grimshaw, who has spent his 40-year career dealing with political, NRL and business crises, has been engaged for one of his toughest gigs — explaining to members and fans why the Sharks will be closing their home ground for the next two years while the leagues club is redeveloped.
SPOTTED II
Don’t worry about slip, slop, slap. 2GB’s Erin Molan strapped a Big League program to her cap for the Continuous Call team’s outside broadcast in Gerringong on Saturday.
SPOTTED III
Boxing champ Jeff Fenech and league Immortal Joey Johns in Singleton on Friday as guest speakers at a sporting fundraiser. “It’s the first time I’ve heard Joey speak at a lunch and he was sensational,” Fenech said. “Seriously, his old stories and the way he delivers them are as good as I’ve heard.”
