Hughes played all 80 minutes of the 22-8 victory in Melbourne and set up a classy try for Suliasi Vunivalu to put the Storm ahead in the first half. The 25-year-old was also denied a try of his own after a contentious obstruction call in the second half.

However, the Storm have revealed the New Zealander will need to undergo surgery after breaking his hand.

Hughes signed with the Storm in 2017 and has represented the Melbourne-based club in 43 NRL games, scoring 15 tries.

Teammate Josh Addo-Carr also had an injury scare during Friday’s game, clutching at his rib cage after a tackle in the first half. The star winger also played out the full 80 minutes and scored a stunning try in the 65th minute, albeit in considerable discomfort.

There were concerns Addo-Carr would also join Melbourne’s casualty ward, but the Storm confirmed on Saturday: “His ribs are ok and will be fine to play in round 5.”

Forward Tui Kamikamica and winger Sabndor Earl have also been sidelined due to injury.

Friday’s victory pushed the Storm up to fourth spot on the NRL ladder after suffering a heavy loss to the Canberra Raiders in round three.

Melbourne will come up against the Newcastle Knights on the Central Coast next Saturday.
