One of Liam Hampson’s closest footy mates has revealed for the first time what happened in the hours before the rising Queensland rugby league player died on a night out at a Spanish nightclub.
Fellow Queensland player Will Brimson shared his grief as he posted two photos to his social media account showing their “last night out together ever”, at the Sala Apolo club in Barcelona.
He described it as one of the “best nights” with the popular Redcliffe Dolphins hooker who was a “little brother” he will “miss like crazy”.
He said on Instagram, “I’m just so grateful I got to not only have the best holiday of my life, but also one of the best nights with you one last time.”
“Man you were the most unique person I have ever met and that “never give a f**k” attitude (I.e. you wearing the worst kit in the room and still rocking it for days) is what made you who you are.
“You were legit the happiest bloke I knew and never seemed to be stressed ever which is rare my man.
“I’m hurting dude writing this because this wasn’t meant to be man.”
“You became not only a mate but a little brother and I will forever cherish the times we spent together because f**k me we miss you like crazy man.
“The prank calls, the funny one liners and your overall happiness was infectious my guy and I’m shattered your not here anymore.
“If I’m gonna take anything away from this it’s to enjoy your life and be happy, stop worrying about the little sh*t and just smile, it’s free!
“Sad sad sad time in our lives man. I miss you legend, til next time JackRabbit RIP.”
Drinking and enjoying life with friends, Hampson posed for pictures inside the pack club before he fell to his death at the venue.
Beaming broadly surrounded by his NRL mates on the trip of a lifetime around Europe, he waved into the camera in his favoured cap with Will, alongside Brisbane Broncos star Jordan Riki and Titans fullback Alexander ‘AJ’ Brimson.
The group was drinking vodka, Red Bull and Fanta before Hamspon left the table in search of the bathroom.
Hampson, 24, was found dead at the popular nightclub after becoming locked out of the venue he left via an emergency exit.
Security cameras of the Sala Apolo club have captured the tragic moment on CCTV where he unknowingly jumped to his death in the dark, leaping over a wall and falling 10 metres into an interior club courtyard in what police say was a “tragic accident.”
Videos provided by the club handed to police reportedly show him leaving through an emergency door with one of his footballer friends begging him not to and urinating in the corner of an interior terrace.
He allegedly jumped over a one metre wall but in the darkness he did not see the drop on the other side.
Riki has also been left shattered by the tragedy and shared a video tribute of their trip overseas on social media to the tune of Puff Daddy’s song I’ll Be Missing You.
“Hey my boy doesn’t feel real I feel so blessed to have been apart of your life,” he wrote.
“You bring a energy into a room that no body else can you have a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone without hesitation.
“I love you my boy my heart hurts but we live on your amazing memories that you have given us. Love you Hampo, it was a trip of a lifetime”.
Officials at the High Court’s medical legal department have told News Corp they cannot begin toxicology reports until Hampson’s parents view his body.
Liam’s father Brett, step-mum Jamie Hampson and his mum Lorna Mornton are expected in Barcelona this weekend.
DFAT are providing consular assistance to Hampson’s family.
