Has there ever been a better era for fullbacks in rugby league?
Even without retired Melbourne great Billy Slater, the game has never had as many outstanding players wearing the No.1 jersey at the same time. James Tedesco, Tom Trbojevic, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Kalyn Ponga are all superstars.
I’d throw in Canberra Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad as the next best on current form.
Just this weekend:
— Tedesco had two linebreaks, a try and ran for 262m;
— Trbojevic had 24 hit-ups for 250 metres, two linebreaks, a try and a try assist.;
— Ponga had an offload, two try assists, a linebreak;
— Tuivasa-Sheck ran for 300m to engineer the Warriors’ comeback win over Cronulla; and
— Nicoll-Klokstad scored a try and ran for 121m.
Somehow Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga will have to get Tedesco, Turbo and Ponga into his backline. Tedesco is clearly the best player in rugby league and will get the fullback jersey.
Trbojevic will play centre, while Ponga will be at five-eighth or in No.14 off the bench.
