The Newcastle Knights are attempting to downplay a training session scuffle between firebrand playmaker Jackson Hastings and import Will Pryce.

The set-to occurred last week but the identity of the two players wasn’t revealed until Wednesday.

This masthead understands the quarrel was heated but no punches were thrown.

Teammates have told their managers that the two players were involved in a “push and shove.”

The dispute was quickly de-escalated and Newcastle continued and completed their training session.

It happened during an opposed session.

Newcastle officials haven’t swelled on the incident, pointing out that similar dramas occur at most clubs given the high-intensity and pressure of NRL football.

One source said: “It was a push and shove but wasn’t a punch up. They were just direct with each other.”

Hastings and Pryce aren’t close but enjoy a solid working relationship.

They were told to express their frustrations but then “walk away and get the job done.”

The club’s focus is about “sticking together” to secure strong results.

Pryce, the son of former Great Britain player Leon, is popular among the Knights playing group.

Hastings has carved out a home at Newcastle with the club showing him strong support.

Pryce has played one NRL game this year and seven NSW Cup matches.

He has been described as “cheeky and likeable.”

The pair have moved on quickly from the flare-up.

Although he played some fullback at Huddersfield, Pryce has been playing in the halves in reserve grade.

Newcastle has endured a challenging season, winning two of seven games while losing their skipper Kalyn Ponga long-term to injury.

The Knights play the Dolphins this Sunday in Brisbane.
