NSW coach Laurie Daley has full trust star prop Payne Haas will deliver despite a back injury that has sidelined him for almost all of the State of Origin field preparations leading into Wednesday night’s decider.
In a huge sigh of relief for the state, Daley has given his best assurances Haas and winger Brian To’o will play game three at Accor Stadium following a hit-out on Monday night.
The pair have been under an injury cloud the entire preparation, and while To’o completed the final field session with heavy strapping on his left knee, Haas worked separately to the team with a physio on an ongoing back issue.
But unless something unexpected happens, the Blues will run out 1-17 as named. No fitness test needed.
“They were good, Brian trained all session, Payne did a little bit,” Daley said ahead of captain’s run on Tuesday morning.
“We always knew going into the game that Payne would be on restricted duties, and he’ll be ready for game night.
“Unless anything happens between now and then, which I don’t expect it to, we’ll be 1-17.”
While To’o has trained with the team, Haas has barely spent time on the training field with the Blues across the entire series.
The Brisbane champion still delivered a monster performance in game one and backed it up in game two despite carrying a string of issues.
“His body of work, some people you wouldn’t give that time to, but the fact that he’s done it before (means we trust him),” Daley said.
Haas played around 60 minutes in both games and will be up for another huge stint upfront on Wednesday.
“To be fair (the limited preparation will) probably help him more than anything. He plays big minutes for a front-rower, plays every game, battles on, so he probably needs a bit of a freshen up to be fair,” Daley continues.
“He’ll be champing at the bit to get out there.
“He wanted to do more, but it’s not about having him right on a Monday night, it’s about having him right on the Wednesday.
“Because of what Payne’s done in the past you’re prepared to back him. If it was a young guy on debut or only played one or two games, you wouldn’t give him the length of time we’ve given him.
“Given what he’s gone through this series, he hasn’t trained much, he’s had all sorts of lower leg issues stemming from the back, so just to be able to do what he does is amazing.”
