GREG Inglis will dictate when he returns to his favoured fullback role as he prepares to make his comeback after a year on the sidelines.

Inglis will start only his third game at centre in six years for the Rabbitohs after he lasted just 50 minutes last season before seriously injuring his knee.

While Inglis will wear the No. 4 jersey, he left little doubt where he saw his long-term future, declaring he would “eventually” return to fullback.

“That’s the position I love playing,” Inglis said.

“I feel fine in myself but until a ball is kicked off and you’re out there for 80 minutes … it’s not going to be an easy task.

“It’s going to be very physical and demanding on your body. I just have to go out there and see how we go.

“After the Charity Shield, even though I played 20 minutes, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I woke up the next morning and I was still smiling.

“I was just happy and thankful I got through it without any injuries.”

Inglis has starred in the centres for Queensland and Australia and coach Anthony Seibold refused to put a time frame on when Inglis would shift back to fullback.

“Once Greg comes to me and says, ‘Listen, I want to move back to fullback’, that would be fair indication,” Seibold said.

“We’re not looking too far ahead and Alex Johnston has had a good pre-season for us and we’re really comfortable with him being there.

“Until at some stage Greg comes and has a chat and says he’s ready to go back there ... we’ll see how the conversation goes then.

“This is about his transition coming back from an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) into playing an NRL game. They’re difficult games to play.”
