Former Roosters superstar Joey Manu is reportedly considering requesting a release from his contract in French Rugby, which could pave the way for an NRL return.

The 28-year-old is currently plying his trade for Japan’s Toyota Verblitz, having already signed with French club Racing 92.

Manu is due to report for pre-season training in July, with the season set to begin in August, however he’s reportedly considering a return Sydney or New Zealand for family reasons according to the SMH.

Should Manu be able to secure a release prior to June 30, he would be eligible to return to the NRL after becoming a free agent.

However, it’s reportedly more likely the Kiwi international will be able to return to the NRL in 2026, with his French contract containing one-year and a further year with an option.

Manu could also reportedly join Super Rugby franchises, potentially eyeing an opportunity to make his debut for the All Blacks.

Racing 92 are fighting to avoid relegation from the French Rugby top glight, currently in 11th with two teams relegated each season in the 14-team competition.

Stuart Lancaster, the coach who signed Manu, has since also departed the club.

It remains to be seen whether the gun outside back has a preference regarding a potential return to the NRL, having left the Roosters on good terms.

Joseph Manu settles in with his new Japanese rugby side

He played 181 games for the Tricolours after making his debut in 2016, although it’s understood the Roosters may struggle to find salary cap space at short notice.

However the Warriors have emerged as a front-runner for his services, given they have salary cap space immediately and a vacancy at his preferred fullback position.

The New Zealand outfit reportedly have a healthy amount of cap space available following the shock retirement of Tohu Harris and Dylan Walker’s exit.

Manu could slot into the No.1 jersey for the Warriors in 2026, with current fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad reportedly linked with a move to the Super League.

However, Warriors chief executive Cameron George denied the club had held discussions regarding recruiting the former Rooster.

“If Joey Manu was to become available we would definitely sit down with his management,” George said.
