A FITTING week for Wayne Bennett to bring up win 400 and Corey Oates isn’t doing his second-row aspirations any favours.

Here’s the five things we learned from Brisbane’s 38-18 win over the Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium.

Sam Thaiday and Darius Boyd provided the broncos with some veteran assurance.

1 – THE Broncos have kept their finals hopes alive after another tumultuous week off the field for the club. Despite a scare midway through the match, Brisbane defied South Sydney’s forward pack to maintain their place in the top eight. While they are not yet guaranteed of a finals appearance, the victory was a crucial one for their premiership hopes.

2 – IT was a fitting week for Wayne Bennett to claim his 400th career win. After more developments around his future and the reported tension between him and CEO Paul White, his team delivered in the perfect way. Bennett had to wait three weeks for the milestone, but it came at the right time.

3 – COREY Oates may want to be a backrower, but he is one of the best wingers in the competition. He is a great finisher and proved it on Thursday night when he scored a hat trick. His third and final try came in the 61st minute with the scores locked at 18-all. It was the game changer for the Broncos.

4 – VETERAN forward Sam Thaiday looks as though he is going to farewell rugby league with a bang. South Sydney’s pack put up a real fight midway through Thursday night’s game, but it was Brisbane’s forwards who had the last laugh. Thaiday himself ran for 100m and his injection in the second stanza was noticeable.

5 – THAT was one of Brisbane’s best attacking performances of the year but there will be concerns over their defence. They had an 18-0 lead over South Sydney before the scores were tied with 25 minutes remaining. The Broncos finished with 37 missed tackles and will also need to sharpen up their edge defence as they head into the finals.
