Eels dump coach’s son after Molan steps in over trolling storm

The Eels have made an extraordinary decision to axe Jake Arthur following a storm that saw Erin Molan leap to his defence.

The Eels have dumped coach Brad Arthur’s son Jake following extraordinary accusations of nepotism and a trolling storm as part of a blockbuster day of NRL team announcements.

After Parramatta’s surprise loss to the Cowboys in Round 8 some angry Eels fans accused the veteran coach of selecting his 19-year-old son at five-eighth ahead of star playmaker Dylan Brown, purely because of their family connection.

Brown was shifted to the centres to help cover the club’s injury crisis to its outside back positions.

Footy greats hit back at unfair criticism of both Brad and Jake Arthur and The Daily Telegraph reported Parramatta’s executive producer Kate Cardwell responded to trolls by writing: “Sick of the s**t comments. It is football.

“Sick of the bullying and negativity. I don’t think you know how much your words hurt.”

Former NRL presenter Molan took to Instagram to share her feelings, throwing her support behind Cardwell for taking a stand.

“Proud of you @Katecardwell - call it out when it’s unacceptable,” Molan wrote.

“Stand up for your players — paying members and fans have every right to be angry/frustrated and express that publicly — but relentless abuse of a young bloke is NOT OK.

“Love your passion Kate — your club should be proud.”

Arthur’s position in the time has been put in the spotlight as a result of the trolling storm — and it makes his axing even more surprising.

The Eels named their team to face the Panthers on Friday night in Penrith and revealed Brown has been moved back to the No. 6 jumper. Arthur has been dropped to the reserves.

Footy commentators earlier this week rubbished the suggestions Arthur was only playing in the team because of his dad.

Penrith premiership hero Martin Lang tweeted: “Jake Arthur is only 19 years of age and is a fine prospect. I’d like to see the CVs of those behind the nepotism accusations. Miserable, jealous individuals who want nothing more than to discredit the coach.”

Parramatta’s official Twitter account hit back at keyboard warriors on social media, saying “the Arthur joke is enough” and “it’s not funny”, before those tweets were later deleted.

Jarrod Croker returns for the Raiders

Raiders captain Jarrod Croker is set to play his first game in 292 days after failing to recover from a knee injury that has kept him reserve grade this year.

The 31-year-old’s return is one of several changes to the Raiders’ team, including Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returning to fullback and Matt Frawley being selected at five-eighth after Jack Wighton was suspended.

Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic has been picked to make his return when the Sea Eagles face the Tigers on Saturday.

As reported by foxsports.com.au, his return is one of many big selection surprises, including:

— Broncos forward Payne Haas being out with a shoulder injury. Brisbane welcomes back forward Patrick Carrigan.

— Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga has been picked at fullback despite calls for him to be shifted to play five-eighth.

— Knights playmaker Jake Clifford has been dropped.

— Wade Graham will play his first game of the season for the Sharks.
