Saint, sinner, shoosh: Wayne Bennett’s Origin sacrifice
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has launched a heavy attack on the NRL, claiming the game is “moving into a very dangerous area” with rule changes and desperately needed “common sense”.
Stuart labelled the sin-binning of Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga on Friday night a “disgrace” and claimed the NRL had to stop “trying to please everyone”.
Speaking after his side’s 30-18 win over Penrith, Stuart took aim at the NRL match review committee and judiciary panel for suspending his star player, Nick Cotric, for three games over a dangerous throw.
Stuart immediately drew comparisons between Cotric and a dangerous throw by Manly’s Jake Trbojevic on Melbourne’s Jahrome Hughes on Saturday night that attracted a grade-one charge and no suspension with an early guilty plea.
“Which one did they get wrong?” Stuart said.

Worrying signs: Injuries, ban fears give Robbo cause for concern
“Did they get Nick Cotric wrong or did they get Jake’s wrong. I commend the match review committee because I reckon they got young Trbojevic’s right.
“It was an accident, exactly the same way that Nick Cotric’s (tackle) was an accident. This game is moving into a very, very dangerous period in regards to the consistent interpretations that we are getting continually changed.
“We have a very high-speed game and at high speed we have huge collisions and there are going to be accidents.
“James Maloney had a crusher on Johnny Bateman tonight. I would have loved to been given a penalty, but for the game, we don’t need a penalty there. It was a complete and pure accident.
“We are getting too many people put out of the game because of accidents.”
