Clint Gutherson’s nine-year, 206-game run with Parramatta is officially over after the club granted him a release on Thursday.

Gutherson is just one big name expected to switch clubs this month, with ex-Dragon Ben Hunt on the lookout for a new home and Roosters hooker Brandon Smith also no certainty to stay with the Tricolours.

The 30-year-old Gutherson’s days appeared numbered with the Eels in recent weeks as speculation built over his desire to continue his career elsewhere.

Having joined the Eels from Manly back in 2016, he represented the Blues and the Kangaroos during his time with the western Sydney club.

He is now expected to join Shane Flanagan’s St George Illawarra rebuild on a multi-year deal.

The Daily Telegraph reported the Dragons have secured a medical report and formally tabled a three-year, $2.5 million offer for Gutherson, who can play fullback or in the halves.

A popular stalwart during his long run with the Eels, the man known as “Gutho” thanked the club’s fans in a statement released by Parramatta on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to wear the blue and gold,” Gutherson said.

“The support from the fans over the last nine years has been overwhelming and I’m truly grateful for the opportunities the club has given me to grow as a player and a person.

“I will always cherish my time at the Eels and the relationships I’ve built along the way.”

The Eels also offered their support to the New South Welshman, conceding they had hoped he would be part of their plans in 2025.

“We would have liked Clint to be part of our squad in 2025,” new coach Jason Ryles said.

“But we respect his desire to explore new opportunities and believe it’s important to support him in what he feels is best for his career.

“Clint will always be a valued part of our club and we know he’ll succeed wherever he goes.”

Parramatta’s football manager Mark O’Neill added: “Clint has been an incredible servant of our club.

“He has been one of the most consistent performers in the NRL over a number of years.

“The legacy Clint leaves, as a former captain of the club, is one of courage and competitiveness, two key attributes for any young aspiring NRL player.”

The Gutherson news came amid reports the Roosters are keen to gauge interest in Smith from other clubs.

Smith, who is rehabbing a serious knee injury, is said to be happy to take his time determining the next step in his career.
