Brisbane Broncos star Kotoni Stagg has revealed sweet details of how he planned for months his proposal to girlfriend Brittany Becht.
The pair have been together since 2021 and shared their exciting news on Instagram last week, posting “for life” and a white heart emoji.
Staggs told Newswire on Wednesday he had planned the engagement all year and had the ring made, with his fiance telling him every little detail she wanted.
“I have six olders sisters so they came in very helpful,” he said.
“One of my sisters knows a bit about diamonds so we booked a meeting down on the Gold Coast where the ring was made, and my sister came down and helped me pick it all out.
“(Brittany) wasn’t expecting anything was going to happen, I picked the ring up on Friday and called her old man who lives in New Zealand.”
Staggs proposed the old fashioned way and asked Brecht’s father first, saying to him over the phone that he wished they could be face-to-face.
“It was a pretty emotional phone call between myself and him, there were a couple of tears,’ Staggs told NewsWire at the Sapporo Izakaya at Brisbane’s Night Feast on Wednesday.
“I asked him, ‘Can I marry your daughter?’ And he just said, ‘what was that?’
“He started crying after I asked a second time, and he said, ‘yeah, 110 per cent you can marry (Brittany) I give you my full yes.’
“Just look after her, give her my love and just make her happy.”
After Staggs picked up the ring, he hid it in his golf bag in the garage knowing she would never take the bag anywhere, then took Brecht to the Ocean View winery about an hour north of Brisbane for the big moment two days later.
Brecht had suggested they cancel the date because it was raining.
“We still went, she had no idea what was going on,” Staggs said.
“When we pulled up I started shaking, my whole body was shaking.
“We walked in and sat down next to a fireplace, we’re talking and I ask, ‘where’s the food menu’ ... she gave me the food menu.
“I couldn’t even look at it, I couldn’t even talk, and she knew something was going down.
“(Brittany) went to the bathroom, before I asked her to marry me, she took a photo in the mirror and thought she would send it to her friend and say, ‘I think he’s going to ask the question,’ but she didn’t want to do it in case I didn’t.
Staggs said they found some umbrellas and went for a walk to a little park on a pond.
“I went down my knee, and she just started bawling,” he said.
“It ended up turning out to be one of the best days of my life.”
Staggs said he knew Brecht was going to be the one and he was glad he got a yes from father and a yes from his future bride.
“She’s been a big part of my life, she’s been through the tough times and the good times, and she’s got me to where I am today,” he said.
Staggs said it was important for him to have the ring there to show Brecht he was committed to her, and they were not in a rush for the wedding but would see what the year brought them.
“I’m just looking forward to spending time with her and the rest of our lives together.
“For now, we’re just happy that, she’s got a ring and she knows that I’m hers now.”
