Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds has undergone neck surgery after picking up a knock at training before Christmas.

Reynolds underwent a minor procedure last week which will sideline him for a month of pre-season. Broncos officials are confident the surgery – described as a clean-up - won’t sideline him for the start of the NRL proper but he will be a notable absentee from the rest of the Broncos group when they return for pre-season training on Monday.

The injury occurred during a contact session just before the Broncos broke for Christmas. It left Reynolds with a shooting pain through his right arm with the surgery required to repair the nerve damage.

It was decided that Reynolds should have the operation now to ensure he is back to full fitness by the time Brisbane kick-off their season under new coach Michael Maguire against the Roosters on March 6.

Whilst the veteran half is expected to be right for the season it does hamper Brisbane’s preparations given they will have a new-look halves combination.

Reynolds is due to partner fellow experienced half Ben Hunt with this setback delaying the time the pair get to spend together before kick-off.

The injury does make Hunt’s arrival even more important with Reynolds now under a question mark and Ezra Mam suspended for nine games.

Reynolds was cleared of a serious neck injury in 2023 after slamming his head into the ground while attempting to score a try against Melbourne.

The 34-year-old – who is off-contract at the end of the season – had an injury plagued last season featuring in just 13 games after he ruptured his biceps.

Whilst Reynolds’ set-back is considered minor – it is nothing compared to what North Queensland have gone through already. The Cowboys have two players - Heilum Luki and Tom Chester – who suffered season ending knee injuries in December during the pre-season. Jason Taumalolo could miss the opening month of the season to repair a Lisfranc injury sustained during the Pacific Championships.
