Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has praised Russell Crowe’s impact on South Sydney as the star actor ponders a move to sell his share in the Rabbitohs.
Crowe’s 25 per cent stake in South Sydney has been the subject of conjecture since this masthead revealed there was an interest by the Hollywood big name to part ways with the club.
Whilst Crowe played down suggestions he wanted out labelling talk as “conspiracy theories” Albanese had nothing but respect for the man who has owned the Rabbitohs since 2006.
“Russell Crowe has made a great contribution to South Sydney,” he said.
Crowe could ask for almost $20 million should he proceed with the sale of the club he co-owns with tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and James Packer. The South Sydney members own the remaining 25 per cent.
Despite a disappointing 2024 season which led to the mid-year sacking of Jason Demetriou, the Rabbitohs faithful are full of hope this year sparked by the return of Wayne Bennett.
Albanese – South Sydney’s no.1 ticket holder – is no different. Crowe had a major part in attracting Bennett back to the club with Albanese believing that could be enough to catapult the side back into finals contention.
Albanese is doing a pre-election blitz of Queensland and took time out to praise one of Queensland’s favourite sons in Bennett.
“I’m very upbeat about the coming season, as I always am every January, if you’d ask me, anytime since 1971 in any January, I would have told you that Souths were going to win the comp that year,” Albanese said.
“We have got the super coach back, a great Queenslander in Wayne Bennett, and he is a great motivator of men, and they have the cattle on the field.
“I’m very confident about this year.”
