Angus Crichton’s dad reveals bipolar diagnosis, indefinite NRL leave

Angus Crichton’s dad has revealed the NRL star is receiving treatment for bipolar disorder and will continue his indefinite break from the sport.

The father of Sydney Roosters star Angus Crichton has revealed that his son is out for an indefinite period after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Crichton, a key member of the Roosters forward pack, is yet to play for the club this season after sitting out both their trial games.

News Corp earlier this month revealed he was dealing with personal issues and his father has now confirmed he will miss the start to the season as he receives professional treatment for bipolar disorder.

“I can confirm today that Angus is under appropriate professional support and treatment for medically diagnosed bipolar disorder which he has been dealing with for some time,” Crichton’s father Charlie said in a statement to Nine News.

“He is fully supported by his family, his management and the Sydney Roosters club as he works toward recovery. While no timeline has been set for his return to rugby league, we will continue to trust his medical team and know those within the rugby league community will respect his right to privacy.”

Crichton was a vital cog in Australia’s successful World Cup campaign last year, making his debut for his country and playing in the final as they toppled Samoa.

He was given an extended break by the Roosters at the end of the tournament and then missed the club’s camp in New Zealand, prompting concern over whether he would be ready for the start to the season.

Those concerns have now become a reality as Crichton’s health and wellbeing becomes the priority for his family and club.

The Roosters have a host of question marks surrounding their line-up heading into the opening clash of the season against the Dolphins.

Crichton won’t play while star centre Joey Manu is fighting to be fit from a facial injury. Luke Keary and Joseph Sua’ali’i have had head knocks while Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is battling a back issue.

The Roosters will also be without Billy Smith, Sitili Tupouniua and Connor Watson who will be out of action because of long-term injuries.

Crichton re-signed with the club until the end of 2024 late last year.
