Analysis: The top 10 best Queensland schoolboy footballers from 2019

IT WAS another spectacular year of schoolboy football throughout Queensland in 2019 and with all the action done and dusted, The Courier-Mail has gone back through the footage to analyse 50 of the best players throughout the state.

Nic Darveniza, Andrew Dawson, and Lachlan Grey were on the ground throughout the year for the likes of the Langer Cup, the GPS Rugby, and the AIC Rugby League, and had a sideline view of some of our best teenage talents.

Their experience coupled with couriermail.com.au’s exclusive livestream replays has resulted in this list of our future footballing stars.

Up until this point the top 40 hasn’t been in any particular order, but the top 10 has been ranked to give you a guide on who we think the best of the best have been in 2019.

While they currently look like they have the best shot to play professionally, there are hundreds of teenagers unlucky to miss out.

Here’s our top 10.

10. DION SAMUELA

(The Southport School)

THE livewire has made a few fans in his tenure at fullback for the Gold Coast’s biggest rugby school, including former Broncos winger Denan Kemp. “I’m a huge fan of this kid,” he said. “If he has the mental toughness to work through an NRL system he will be a superstar.” The Queensland Reds have selected Samuela in their Under-18s Academy.

9. WILSON BLYTH

(The Southport School)

THE younger brother of Queensland Reds lock Angus Blyth has signed a three-year development deal to join him at Ballymore. The Southport School’s 2m lock is an aerial menace and sure tackler.

8. KALANI THOMAS

(Ipswich Grammar)

THE x-factor Ipswich Grammar scrumhalf has posted one of the best performances of any schoolboy in that position this decade. The Reds Academy starter has scored 7 tries, assisted on 13 and broken the line 12 times in eight matches.

7. ADRIAN TREVILYAN

(Kirwan SHS)

REIGNING Peter Sterling Medallist after steering Kirwan SHS to a comeback win in this year’s NRL Schoolboys Cup final. Level-headed and peerless in defence, Trevilyan shows shades of Damien Cook with his darting runs from dummy half and would slot seamlessly into any senior side. Currently in NQ system but rival clubs will be circling after his recent exploits.

6. TOBY SEXTON

(Palm Beach Currumbin)

ANOTHER product of Palm Beach Currumbin, Sexton enjoyed a charmed club campaign with Tweed Heads under 18 side this year and has been signed by Gold Coast Titans. A canny halfback with plenty of tricks up his sleeve, Sexton also possesses a strong running and short kicking game. Will press Ash Taylor, Tyrone Roberts and Tanah Boyd for a starting Titans role in coming years.

5. JAYDEN CLARKSON

(Wavell SHS)

THE Wavell SHS front rower is one of the hottest properties in rugby league today and created headlines earlier this month after switching allegiances from Brisbane to Canberra. The Redlands Parakeets junior sheds tackles for fun and lined up for Australian Schoolboys after impressing in QLD Schools’ ASSRLC win over NSW.

4. TC ROBATI

(Marsden SHS)

GUN wide-running second rower seemingly destined for the NRL. The hard-running Marsden Mako is signed to Brisbane Broncos and can also play as a tough middle forward. Blessed with strength and deceptive pace - expect to see him in Wynnum-Manly’s senior side next year and pressing for higher honours.

3. JACK HOWARTH

(Brisbane Boys College)

THE Rockhampton centre dominated the GPS rugby competition with ball-in-hand through 2019, averaging five tackle busts and two linebreaks per match for BBC. The Year 11 student will link with the Melbourne Storm in 2021.

2. REESJAN PASITOA

(St Joseph’s Nudgee College)

THE run-first, freewheeling Nudgee flyhalf is adept at using his 100kg frame to trap defenders like deer in the headlights in the inside channels, freeing up space out wide. The Brumbies signing will compete for the starting No.10 jersey in Canberra from the moment he graduates.

1. SAM WALKER

(Ipswich Grammar)

THE Sydney Roosters were wise to snap up Ipswich Grammar School’s field general playmaker. Walker’s crisp skills and deceptive speed have helped him to unlock and toy with unsuspecting defences in both codes during his senior year.
