A rising NRL star was allegedly behind the wheel during a multi-car crash in Sydney’s sought-after eastern suburbs that left a man with “serious foot injuries”.

Roosters rookie halfback Sandon Smith was not required to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Friday as he faced a single charge of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Police allege the 21-year-old failed to give way while driving his Audi sedan on Old South Head Rd in Vaucluse about 7.30am on March 31, colliding with both a Mazda SUV and a Toyota SUV.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 38-year-old man at the scene for serious foot injuries before taking him to St Vincent’s Hospital,” a police spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

“Following investigations, on September 10, 2024, a 21-year-old man was issued a future court attendance notice and charged with negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.”

Ms Smith's lawyer told the court on Friday that the halfback, believed to be overseas on an end-of-year holiday, would appear before the court on November 15 when pleas are to be entered.

Mr Smith will then state whether he will fight the allegations. If he pleads guilty or is found guilty and convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of nine months in prison.

A Roosters spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Telegraph on Thursday hat they were aware of the matter and the NRL integrity unit had also been notified of the allegations.

Mr Smith made his NRL debut last year and featured in the finals series last month. He has 29 NRL appearances to his name and is contracted to stay on with the Roosters until 2026.
