Supercars star Will Brown to drive against the best in NASCAR cameo

Current Supercars leader Will Brown will fly to the United States in June for an opportunity to drive in the NASCAR Cup Series, but he’s adamant it won’t impact his championship dream.

V8 Supercars ace Will Brown has been given an opportunity reserved for a select few world wide - a NASCAR drive.

The 25-year-old, who will head drive for Richard Childress Racing (RACR) at the Toyota Save Smart 350 NASCAR Series Cup race in June, is adamant his United States adventure will not get in the way of his lifelong dream.

Brown remains 100 per cent committed to winning races and ultimately championships with Red Bull Ampol Racing.

“It (NASCAR) is a very exciting and big opportunity to be able to go over and race the top tier NASCAR against the best in America,” Brown said.

“Obviously V8 Supercars is my main focus but to do this race at Sonoma Raceway is awesome and I’m grateful for it.

“For me right now, I’ve just started with Red Bull Ampol, and I want to be here for a very long winning races and hopefully championships.

“They (Red Bull Ampol Racing) are a fantastic team and I think I have the people to do a good job and that’s shown this year.

“It’s the people here that have allowed me to succeed.”

Brown is no stranger to the NASCAR environment having driven for RCR in the past.

Last year he raced in an eight-hour endurance race with the team’s frontline stars Kyle Busch and Austin Dillion.

He obviously made an impression with the team, who currently sit 13th in the Owner’s Championships, inviting him back for another drive - this time as an individual.

“I went over at the end of last year and raced with Richard Childress Racing in an eight hour race with Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon,” Brown said.

“We had a good result and I stayed in touch with the team and I guess my good start in Supercars this year helped things along.”

Brown has just returned from the United States where he spent a week at RCR in their car simulator as well as working on his seat fittings and ensuring he has all the necessary licensing to compete.

He will have to hit the ground running in June with just a week to prepare for his race.

“I’ll head over the Sunday before the June 9 race and spend four days in Charlotte where the team is based on the simulator and then we will fly over to Sonoma for the race,” he said.

“For me I’m not doing an oval (race) I’m doing one of the road course races so it’s very similar to what I’m already doing.

“There is a lot of differences though, it’s a lot of procedural stuff around pit lane and the like and they run a lot different tyre so the car will feel a lot different.

“You don’t get a lot of practice over there but hopefully with the simulator and all the other stuff they have it will get me prepared well enough.”
