Aussie MotoGP star Remy Gardner slams legendary dad over sacking storm

Aussie MotoGP star Remy Gardner has publicly rebuked his father after the motorsports legend slammed the treatment of his son.

Australian MotoGP star Remy Gardner has defended his manager after his legendary father blamed him for costing his son his seat for next season.

Gardner has been dropped by his team KTM for 2023, leaving his future in the top tier of motorcycle racing up in the air.

The 24-year-old is languishing in 23rd in the overall standings, with just nine championship points to his name after 13 races — still more than his teammate Raul Fernandez.

He has been given the flick by KTM, who will likely replace him with current Moto2 championship leader Augusto Fernandez.

His father, 1987 Motorcycle 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner, ripped into his son’s personal manager Paco Sanchez in a fiery Twitter post this week.

“It’s very sad to see Remy MotoGP future coming will end in 2022 because of his so called manager Paco Sanchez ridiculous behaviour with KTM,” Wayne wrote.

“Remy has the talent and potential to win but he needs many changes in his inner circle of management team and other areas.”

Gardner then publicly rebuked his father, posting: “I am very sorry for the words of Wayne Gardner against my manager @PacoSanchez_ZSM.

“Paco isn’t responsible for my KTM exit, and I fully trust in his professionalism and honesty. Together we will find a new project to continue enjoying this sport that I love so much.”

Speaking at last weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix, Gardner claimed his sacking was not due to his performances on the track.

“They said I was not professional enough,” he said.

“That was it.”

Pressed on Gardner’s claim he was dropped for a lack of professionalism, KTM Motorsports Director Beirer told MotoGP.com that was “just not correct”.

“I think that’s just not correct and I don’t want to go into this game now because Remy said obviously some points,” Beirer said.

“But I like this boy, Remy is a fantastic guy and we had some great days together, some great success together.

“I cannot say because he has three responsible managers, this is Herve [Poncharal], the team manager, the road racing programme (head) and myself. None of us told him this, so I don’t really know who brought it up.

“We didn’t call him unprofessional. I can’t even comment because I didn’t say that, and the two colleagues who deal with his contract also didn’t do it.

“So, I don’t know where he got it from.”

Tensions have been simmering away between Gardner, his management and KTM.

After qualifying 22nd for May’s French Grand Prix, Gardner told reporters: “If a f***ing tornado wants to rip up the track and we go home early, that’ll be good.”

Beirer ripped into Sanchez in a brutal rant after the French Grand Prix.

“Paco Sanchez never misses an opportunity to insult us,” Beirer told Germany’s Speedweek.com, adding that rider managers are “the biggest plague that has befallen the paddock in recent years, except for corona(virus)”.

Gardner said the feud between KTM’s bosses and his manager “wasn’t beef with me, that was beef with Paco”.

Gardner may be the reigning Moto2 champion but his poor results in his rookie season were enough for FTM to announce it was parting ways with the Aussie in 2023.

Fellow Australian Jack Miller is sixth in the MotoGP championship — he will move from Ducati to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing next season on a two-year deal.
