A Formula 1 fan has described narrowly avoiding disaster at the Australian Grand Prix, after being hit with debris from a wheel in a dramatic finish to the race.

Will Sweet was sitting on the hill at Albert Park when Denmark’s Haas driver Kevin Magnussen ran wide out of Turn 2 and scraped the wall – ripping part of the wheel rim off his car, and sending it soaring into the packed crowd.

Speaking with 3AW Radio the fan described his incredible escape, which left him with a bloodied arm and a story for the ages.

“I was standing in the crowd at turn two and all of a sudden there was a commotion on the track, so I looked to my right and Magnussen goes flying down the track and all of a sudden something hits me in the arm,” Street explained.

“A bunch of people are running around scrambling around me and someone holds up half of his rim which has flown over the fence and hit me in the arm. It was a bit weird.

“It smacked me in the arm and I was standing there bleeding and I didn’t realise the scramble was to get the bit. Somebody else managed to grab the bit. They let me pose for a picture with it and then took it off. It was a little bit annoying - I would’ve like it as a souvenir.”

Street stayed and watched the thrilling conclusion to the race before being ushered to the medical tent by his fiancée.

“If that had hit my fiancée it would’ve got her right in the head. It could’ve been worse. Lucky it hit me and not somebody else,” he said.

“Right now I can look at it and think that was lucky in a way. It could’ve been extremely unlucky at the same time.”

Sweet was not the only spectator impacted by the carnage at the track. Tennis commentator Jelena Dokic was sitting trackside when a car went into the gravel with debris travelling through the safety barriers and smashing martini glasses.

Crowd safety was significantly increased at Albert Park after trackside marshal Graham Beveridge was killed in 2001 after being struck by a flying wheel at turn three.

“It was far too big to go through the fence, so it must have gone up and over,” Sweet said.

“If rules have to change I have no idea what (could be done).

“I don’t know how it wasn’t worse, to be honest.”

Meanwhile, shocking footage has emerged of fans invading the track at the Australian Grand Prix before the race had concluded, with some spectators coming within metres of the speeding Formula One cars.

It comes as the Australian Grand Prix Corporation was placed under review by the FIA and FIA World Motorsports Council for further investigation after a representative of the AGCP was summoned by stewards on Sunday night to explain the track invasion.

Vision from multiple spectators in the stands shows fans squeezing their way through the barriers not far past the pit lane exit and entering the track.

One man dressed in a blue shirt begins running towards the pit lane exit, before being called back.

Fans then queue at the side of the track and one person can be seen filming the cars as they cross the start-finish line and approach turn one.
