Bathurst - Laps of the Gods

FORGET generation next – this is generation now.

These are the three V8 young-guns that could announce themselves as the next Peter Brock on Sunday by winning the Bathurst 1000.

Already undisputed Supercar’s stars, Scott McLaughlin, Cameron Waters, and Chaz Mostert will be vying to join the Mount Panorama immortals by winning the 1000km Bathurst war.

Set to go head-to-head with six-time winner Craig Lowndes, Waters, 23, will be out to topple the legend that is 20 years his senior.

The Ford young gun was just two year’s old when Lowndes won his first Bathurst title in 1996.

Waters joined McLaughlin, 24, and Mostert, 25 as serious Mount Panorama contenders when he shocked the field to win last month’s Sandown 500 in a V8 boilover.

US INVASION: NASCAR legend next to Supercars?

“This is the one we all want to win,’’ said Prodrive Racing Australia driver Waters.

‘It means a bit more to everyone than any other race. We are really pumped for this one and I think we are a genuine shot at winning Bathurst now.’’

Fellow Ford driver Mostert already has a Mount Panorama win and will be out to write another chapter into the Bathurst history book by conquering the mountain a second time.

“It is the biggest race of the year and the one we all want to win,’’ Mostert said.

“Ask anyone which one they want and they will tell you Bathurst. I would love to get my name on that trophy a second time. One time is bloody special but once you get that feeling you want it again.

“I want to have that feeling where you do 161 laps around here and know you have been the best on the day. It is an amazing feeling and I want it again.’’

McLaughlin, also Ford, is the red-hot favourite to win on Sunday after a stunning season start with powerhouse team DJR Team Penske.
