A spectacular crash has rocked Mount Panorama with a Toyota 86 race car flipping five times in a Bathurst barrel roll.

Similar to the infamous crash suffered by Fabian Coulthard in 2010, support series racer Peter Vodanovich lost control of his Toyota at over 200km/h before flipping the out-of-control race car five times.

Emergency workers rushed to the wrecked car to help Vodanovich, who in a minor miracle, walked away from the crash unhurt.

The Kiwi driver was cleared of injury by Bathurst medical staff – but his car was a write-off.

The support series crash was eerily similar to the 290km/h crash at the Chase by Coulthard in 2010.

In a heart-stopping moment, the then Brad Jones Racing driver flipped his Commodore six times with each spin ripping off a fresh piece of metal.

Now driving a Ford Mustang for DJR/Team Penske, Coulthard is hoping to bury the memory of the crash with a Bathurst 1000 win.

“Hopefully a win would stop people from reminding me about it,’’ Coulthard said.

“It was a massive shunt and I did come back with some scars the year after. It was probably the biggest crash the sport will ever see so of course I came back a bit wary. It took me a few laps to go flat but I don’t even look at the gravel now.’’

Chaz Mostert is another who can lay claim to one of Mount Panorama’s most spectacular modern day smashes.

Breaking his leg and wrist in a sickening hit, Mostert was rushed to hospital after slamming into a concrete wall in 2015.

“The first three months after an accident like that are always the hardest,’’ Mostert said.

“It was a bit of a downer for me at times. You hope something like that never happens again, but if it does you know you’ll be stronger for it next time.”
