Trans Am Series a new support category at the Superloop Adelaide 500

The Trans Am Series will turn heads at the Superloop Adelaide 500 this weekend but one driver has a big fan no matter what type of car he drives.

The Superloop Adelaide 500’s newest support category has a familiar name in the field, who will have one of his biggest supporters on hand in pit lane giving him tips about the circuit.

Brett Holdsworth, older brother to Supercars driver Lee, will be racing in the Trans Am Series, which makes its debut not only at the Adelaide event but at any national round, as well as supporting the main game Supercars series.

It will be the first time in 10 years the brothers will be racing at the same event, albeit in two different categories.

Brett, 38, will be behind the wheel of the TPS Group Chevrolet Camaro in the Trans Am Series. Lee, 37, will drive the Truck Assist Racing Ford Mustang for Tickford Racing in the Supercars championship races.

The brothers are so excited about seeing each other race that they will be the loudest cheers heard for each other from pit lane – if they can be heard above the loud sound of the cars.

The Trans Am Series cars are based on the heroic American muscle cars and has been developing a following in Australia and overseas in the past few years.

The class caters for modern V8-powered, rear-wheel drive muscle cars in a purpose-built space frame chassis and an engine package developing 525 horsepower.

Lee has never seen the Trans Am Series race. He will be marking his own milestone this weekend with his 450th race start.

“This is the most excited I’ve been coming to the Adelaide 500,” he said.

“I’m excited about driving every year, but to get Brett here, it gives me something to watch.”

Likewise, Brett will be Lee’s biggest fan at the circuit.

“I will be hanging off the fence,” he said.

Unfortunately, their father is ill and cannot attend, meaning it is one of the few rounds he will have to miss.

The Holdsworths grew up racing go-karts and last raced together in Commodore Cup.

Lee has been giving his sibling pointers, including in-car footage to watch, which Brett said he had been “watching flat out” to learn the track.

“I’ve literally done 1000 laps of this place, watching it,” he said.

Brett is yet to race his car, presenting an added challenge in addition to the concrete walls on the track and warm racing conditions.

“It’s a lot different to anything I’ve driven before,” he said.

“It’s a mix between a Supercar and a Commodore Cup car.

“It’s really exciting to drive, it’s exciting to watch.

“I think the fans are going to absolutely love these cars.”

The Holdsworth name will not be the only familiar one in the 19-car category, however, with Aaron Seton, son of Australian Touring Car Hall of Famer Glenn, set to pull on the race boots. Adelaide’s own Craig Dontas also is on the entrant list.
