Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds is tipped to join Kelly Racing after parting ways with Erebus Motorsport following just one year of a new decade-long deal.

Amid reports of some tension within the squad, the team confirmed the 2017 Mount Panorama champion would not continue with Erebus in 2021 after deciding to “amicably part ways”.

Reynolds is expected to replace the recently retired Rick Kelly at Kelly Racing in a Mustang next year. The 35-year-old said it had been a difficult decision to leave the squad, where he only last year signed a new 10-year contract.

“My preference has been to stay at Erebus but unfortunately it is time for me to move on,” Reynolds said. “I have really enjoyed my time with the team and leaving has been a very difficult decision to make.

“The team are a fantastic bunch of people that I’ve built really strong relationships with over the past five years and I am proud of what we have been able to achieve together.”

Reynold’s departure means a double-driver change for Erebus for 2021 after Anton De Pasquale’s move to Dick Johnson Racing, replaced by 22-year-old Will Brown.

Brodie Kostecki is considered the favourite to replace Reynolds.

Team owner Betty Klimenko said it was unfortunate both parties could not continue together.

“David has been a significant part of our team since we moved to Melbourne in 2016,” Klimenko said.

“We shared a lot of success together including winning the 2017 Bathurst 1000 and we thank David for all his efforts. However, unfortunately David has decided that his future lies elsewhere, and we do not wish to stop him taking another path.

“David needs to do what is best for him and we need to do what is best for our team’s future and long-term stability. Unfortunately, we were unable to come to an agreement and we have had to go our separate ways.”

Reynolds joined Erebus Motorsport in 2016 and claimed a memorable Bathurst 1000 victory with Luke Youlden the following year.

His best result in the championship with the Erebus was fifth in 2018, but his exit comes after a more challenging 2020 when he finished 12th in the standings.

Reynold’s partner Tahan Lew Fatt is expecting the couple’s first child in February.

The Reynolds move comes after confirmation former DJR driver Fabian Coulthard would join Team Sydney for 2021 and Tim Slade would return to the Supercars grid full-time for Blanchard Racing.
