Daniel Ricciardo warns Sebastian Vettel about the challenge of joining middle order team

Daniel Ricciardo is no stranger to the perils of joining a middle order F1 team - especially when you’ve enjoyed success at the front of the grid. He has some words of advice for Sebastian Vettel.

Daniel Ricciardo has warned Sebastian Vettel he will need completely a new approach to Formula One if he is to see through the challenge of joining a middle order team.

The Ferrari driver – who is yet to secure a seat for 2021 – is currently in talks with Racing Point (Aston Martin) with whom chasing a finish in the points and maybe a podium would become the new focus as opposed to challenging at the front for race wins and world titles.

Switching from a front of the grid team to a middle runner is something Ricciardo has first-hand experience of. And while the pink cars are certainly punching above their weight this season, the Aussie warned his former Red Bull teammate will need to manage his expectations.

“Seb has pretty much (had) his whole career running at the front,” Ricciardo said.

“Probably every year he’s contested in Formula 1 he’s been on the podium more or less, so if he goes into a midfield team it’s foreign territory for him.

“I think it requires a bit more of an open mind, certainly some patience. But yeah that’s obviously up to him and where he sees the next chapter of his career.

“If he’s still got the will to drive and to compete at the top level, then I 100 per cent think he should continue in the sport.

“If the option is in the midfield somewhere, then it’s normally a longer play. So I think he’s going to have to show commitment for not just another 12 months, you’re talking at least 24 months or three years. Two-three years, let’s say that. But that’s something he can answer.

“As a previous teammate, obviously I like Seb, I certainly respect him in the sport and that’s why if he wishes to continue I hope he finds a place where he’s happy.”

Should Vettel’s future be at Racing Point, team owner Lawrence Stroll will find himself with a trick decision to make.

Sack a big money making driver or sack your own son?

Sergio Perez brings in the big bucks through deals with Mexican telecom giants Telmex and Telcel while his teammate Lance was handed a drive in 2019 after his father bought into the team.

The Vettel-Perez line up is by far and away the best option for the team but the Mexican is under no illusions about his future.

“”The choice seems clear to me if someone has to leave,” he said. “I’m a dad, I wouldn’t kick my son out, but there’s not much I can say.

“There are many (rumours) around. From me, nothing - everything remains the same. I have a contract with the team.”

The F1 calendar continues this weekend at Silverstone.
