Dave Reynolds not giving up on claiming this year’s Supercars title

Scott McLaughlin appears to have an unassailable lead in this year’s Supercars championship, but don’t tell Dave Reynolds that.

Dave Reynolds is refusing to give up on his championship dream with the Holden driver claiming he could still run down the all-conquering Fords and claim the V8 crown.

Sitting third on the championship ladder behind the flying DJR/Team Penske double-act of Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard, Reynolds is refusing to concede.

Driving the all new Mustang, McLaughlin has won 14 of 16 races this year to lead the championship by more than 300 points.

“I am not giving up on anything,’’ said Reynolds. “Nothing is impossible, especially in motorsport. Things could go horribly wrong for them so this is not over.’’

Erebus Motorsport driver Reynolds will have to claw back more than 400 points to stop McLaughlin from winning back-to-back crowns.

“It isn’t looking real good if you look at the points situation,’’ Reynolds said.

“But like I said nothing is impossible. They haven’t put a foot wrong this year and it is looking less likely with every round. But I am not going to go away.

“I think we will go to some tracks that will suit as later this year and it will be in our favour. Others will be better for the Fords. They (DJR/Team Penske) are performing well every where so really we will just have to wait and see.

“They have the car speed and strategy, so it has been very difficult for rest of us.’’

Reynolds has his sights firmly set on taking down second-placed Coulthard.

“That is certainly a realistic goal of mine,’’ Reynolds said.

“That is an achievable target. He is about 180 points in front of me so if he has a bad round or something goes wrong we are basically in the hunt for second.’’

Reynolds said his first mission was to be the fastest Holden.

“At the end of the day we want to beat our own,’’ Reynolds said.

“As long as we are the fastest Holden then we have done our job. I would love to still beat everyone but I will be happy if we are the best of the Holdens.”

Locked in a fight with Red Bull to become the best Holden, Reynolds said the battle with Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen would go down to the wire.

“It is very close between us and the Red Bulls,’’ Reynolds said.

“It is really coming down to performance on the day. I think we have had the better of them over the last two rounds but they had our measure before that.

“The battle won’t be over until the end of the year and I am sure it will be close.’’

The Supercars’ championship resumes on Friday with practice for the Townsville SuperSprint.

“Triple Eight have been strong here in the past,’’ Reynolds said.

“But I am sure the DJR cars will find a way to be quick in Townsville like they have been everywhere else.’’
