THE MATCHES

Walters Cup, Mabel Park v Keebra Park

Keebra Park SHS prop Isopo Taunuu scored with four minutes to go to send his side hurtling into the Walters Cup (Year 10) schoolboy rugby league grand final.
Keebra Park won 18-12 over Mabel Park SHS at Ormeau Shearers’ ground, retaining its unbeaten record that was at one stage in serious jeopardy.

Down 10-nil, Mabel Park scored either side of halftime, with Jahrel Condon twisting and spinning to give his team a 12-10 advantage into the second half.

But Mabel Park dropped the ball in the first set of six following the try, gift wrapping possession for Keebra who scored courtesy of  winger Toni Fomai.

Fomai had latched onto halfback Ryder Williams’ long cut out pass for his second try, while minutes later big prop Taunuu scored after pinching the ball in a one-on-one strip.

Unbeaten Keebra Park SHS had turned for home in the second half leading 10-6 after a dummy half dive over try by Mabel Park SHS’s fullback Tane Cook.

It had taken Mabel Park most of the first half to get themselves into the attacking quarter, and when they did right winger Andrew Saokai almost scored, and little fullback Cook did score.

Keebra Park had earlier put a fortress around their unbeaten record, dominating territory and scoring two splendid left side tries to winger Toni Fomai and fullback Joshua Donovan.

Donovan flashed onto the end of a lovely backline movement, scoring in front of his mother and father who were enjoying the match sitting under an old gum tree.

Marsden SHS v PBC SHS, Walters Cup

Marsden SHS and PBC SHS played out an old-fashioned finals’ thriller, with Marsden prevailing 22-12 in the spinetingling Walters Cup semi-final.

A try from tearaway Marsden SHS prop Emmanuel Asomau wrapped up the match minutes from the end, completing a dramatic about face after PBC SHS had put the cleaners through Marsden earlier in the season.

PBC looked to be positioning itself roa come from behind win after a powerful individual try by PBC SHS prop Bobby Smith raised his side from the backblocks after they had slipped behind 16-6.

Who needs trick plays and switches in attack when you have a prop like Smith who is prepared to run straight and hare, which is exactly what he did to score. Marsden SHS then led just 16-12.

PBC SHS almost hit the lead soon after courtesy of a withering dummy half break by Ayden Byrnes, but his pass to Riley Loughland was ruled forward.

Earlier, in the first half, Marsden SHS shocked PBC with a strong start, skipping to a 10-nil lead across the opening quarter of the match.

Marsden were on song, running strongly and controlling possession while backing their skills when the shifts were on.

But PBC SHS refused to panic, recovering to win a succession of penalties through its uptempo brand which sifted momentum their way.

As a result of its field position, winger Brock Tighe swept onto a cross field kick and at 10-6 a minor semi-final classic was unfolding.

Marsden SHS winger Alize Clarke scored twice, the second when he got a fortunate bounce from a towering bomb which raised his team to a 16-6 lead.

LANGER RESERVES

For the second time in 24 hours PBC SHS prevailed in a gruelling Langer semi-final, this time in the Langer Reserves won 12-4 over Keebra Park SHS.

It followed yesterday’s Gold Coast derby which saw PBC SHS qualify for the Langer Trophy decider, against beating Keebra Park.

PBC SHS prop Isaac Scanlan delivered his side the lead 10-6 with a ruck running effort that finished with him twisting his way over the line.

Little did he know at the time, but that try was to prove vital.

It was a tremendous effort by Scanlan who stayed on his feet, nice and alert, after PBC SHS’s little men had delivered their side deep into attack.

Earlier PBC winger Creedance Donovan had scored, swooping onto a brilliant attacking chip kick from JakeThompson after the visionary five-eight had detected a chance on the extremity of the field.

Keebra Park SHS started the second half superbly, drawing level 4-all and it really was anyone’s match.

THE PREVIEW

PLAYERS TO WATCH in today’s Walters finals?

Keebra Park SHS

Ryder Williams

Classy halfback who is signed to the Gold Coast Titans. He has impressed so much he was also named in the extended 20 man squad for the Langer Trophy semi-final on Wednesday. Williams has lots of time with the ball and a great kicking game.

Mason Barber

A true utility, Mason is an outside back who has also spent time roaming through the middle for the Walters Cup side this year. Barber is fast, strong and mobile, with the ability to play anywhere from No.1-13. He is a constant threat everywhere on the park.

Micah Eteru

Micah is a big, physical prop forward who loves the contact. His hard work through the middle has been instrumental to the success of our Walters Cup side so far this season.

PBC SHS

Kaleb Smith

Smith is a ball playing lock who is tough and tenacious. A Queensland under 15 representative who is back after missing a few weeks and will make a big difference to the side.

Sunny Kama

Kama is a powerful running outside back who isn’t afraid of doing the tough stuff coming out of trouble. He will leave defenders in his wake with every carry.

Ayden Byrnes

Byrnes is small in stature but big in heart. Byrnes will make 30 tackles in the middle and give away 30+kgs to most opposition players. He is deceptive with his work out of dummy half and is very quick when he decides it’s time to run.

Kolone is a middle with a motor. The Wynnum Connell front rower goes and goes, all day long.
