Organisers of the iconic Stawell Gift have urged fans to “get your tickets early” after teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout confirmed he would make his debut in Australia’s most prestigious professional foot race during the Easter weekend carnival in country Victoria.
The 17-year-old Queenslander, who broke Peter Norman’s legendary national 200m record that had stood for nearly 50 years, said it would be a “great challenge” to run on grass for the first time in the 147th running of the handicap race.
“I’m looking forward to running at the Stawell Gift in April. It’s going to be great to challenge myself on the grass for 120m,” Gout said.
“I know the history of the event and have been watching some of the past races. It’s a fantastic event and I know the crowd will be ecstatic.”
Gout’s breakout 2024 season put the athletics world on notice with dominating performances on the domestic circuit, multiple national titles, and standout international finishes across Europe and the US.
Gout has also inked a monster deal with Adidas, a signal of the expectations around him.
Melbourne businessman Sandy McGregor has been instrumental in securing Gout’s participation in the carnival and said it would provide something special for the carnival.
“We are pleased to support such an exciting athlete to participate at this iconic event. Our organisation supports many projects in the Wimmera and Mallee for sporting clubs, education opportunities and other important events,” he said.
“The Gift is a great three days spectacle and the addition of Gout will certainly help the crowd and atmosphere in 2025. Buy your tickets early I’d say.”
The Stawell Gift final will be run on Monday, April 21.
