AUSTRALIA’S “other” teenage sensation Cameron Myers is blazing a trail on the world stage, setting another junior record and equalling the Australian mile record.
While schoolboy sprint star Gout Gout has captured the headlines in recent times, 18-year-old Myers is beginning to make a few of his own with another brilliant run against a world-class field at the Millrose Games in New York.
After missing out on qualifying for last year’s Paris Olympics, Myers has wasted no time in making up for lost time this season as evidenced by his brilliant run in finishing third in the iconic indoor Wanamake Mile.
Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse set a world indoor record (3min46.63sec) in the event, defeating fellow American and world road mile champion Hobbs Kessler (3:46.90sec) with Myers over taking Frenchman Azeddine Habz in the final moments to clock a stunning 3:47.48sec.
It is the first time ever an U/20 athlete has run the mile - either indoors or outdoors - in under 3min:48sec and also places Myers as the fourth fastest over the short track mile in history.
The Canberra runner also equalled the Australian mile record which was set by Commonwealth champion Oliver Hoare in 2022.
“I knew I had a big one in me. I was thinking 3:48 or 3:49 would be great, so I was really pleased when I crossed the line,” Myers said.
“My coach (Dick Telford) told me I’m good enough to hang with anyone in the world for 1400-metres, so I tried to do that and I managed to have a little bit left at the end.
“t was one of those race situations that played out perfectly. I got to conserve a lot of energy and at 200 to go, it felt like 400 to go, so it was a good time.”
Myers is on a hot streak having broken either the world U/20 or Open national record in all three races he has contested this year. He has also now qualified for the world championships in Tokyo in September.
“What an amazing race. I certainly planned to run under 3:50 to get the qualifying time for Tokyo and now I’m very happy and super excited I hear it equalled Ollie Hoare’s outdoor time. I’m just really happy,” he said.

Hoare was also competing at the Millrose Games but he was upstaged by another young Aussie Ky Robinson who went under the Australian 3000m short track record which Myers had set a week earlier.
Robinson kept strides with Olympic 1500m champion Cole Hocker for much of the race before finishing fourth in 7:30.38sec. Hoare (7:45.42sec) and fellow Olympian Stewart McSweyn (7:45.46sec) finished ninth and 10th respectively.
Olympic silver medallist Jessica Hull shrugged off illness to run her third fastest indoor 3000m, clocking 8:30.91sec to finish fourth. Victorian Linden Hall ran a personal best 4:24.58sec to finish sixth in the women’s Wanamaker Mile.
Meanwhile, another of Australia’s rising stars Torrie Lewis has kicked off the new season in style with the 20-year-old blazing her way to a personal best of 22.65sec to win her 200m indoor debut in Metz, France,
The time was just 0.01sec outside Melinda Gainsford-Taylor’s Australian short track record from 1995.
