Coolangatta Gold champion Ali Day has become the first athlete - male or female - to win two rounds of this season’s Nutri-Grain series thanks to a time out he didn’t want to take.
The form male lifesaver of the summer surf season so far, Day won the fourth leg of the six-event series with a convincing victory over former multiple series champion Shannon Eckstein and defending series champion Matt Bevilacqua at Currumbin on Saturday.
The win followed on from an 11th in round one, a win in round two and a second in round three just prior to Christmas.
“It felt bloody awesome. It’s also the first time I have won two events in a series,” said the recently engaged Day.
“I just felt clear in the mind and worked with the ocean today, didn’t fight it.
“To win two goes a long way to winning a series.”
Day attributes his fighting form to a short break over Christmas.
“I knew I was spent after that second in the last leg in Wollongong and took a week off,” he said.
“It’s hard to take time off for me. I’ve alway believed the more work the better. The harder I train the better I go.
“But as I get older I am getting better at reading my body so knew I needed to freshen up.”
Currumbin marked the return of Eckstein to the racing arena after he injured his ankle in the opening round of the Nutri-Grain series last year.
Day’s second win has put him well clear of Kendrick Louis and Matt Poole, on equal points in second and third overall in the series with two e ents to race.
The fifth round of the Nutri-Grain ironwoman and ironman series is on the Gold Coast on February 2.
Athletes are able to drop their worse performance at the end of the six event series.
Athletes then head back to their clubs to prepare for he Australian championships which will be raced at Kurrawa from March 30.
