JARRYD Hayne insists he will have no problem returning punts against Pittsburgh this weekend, adamant he is already over the disaster that was his first NFL touch.
While Hayne is sure to be questioned heavily this week about his Monday Night Football clanger, the rookie is adamant he carries no mental scars.
Indeed, following an injury to back-up running back Reggie Bush, Hayne was asked to step up into the role as support for 49ers superstar Carlos Hyde — where he contributed solidly.
Asked about the situation, Hayne laughed: “I was like ‘damn, I’ve just dropped the ball and now I’m second string’.
“I’m thinking shit. C’mon now. Get it together.
“It was one of those things. I got an opportunity, I took it with both hands and tried to do my best.
And you did some good stuff, right?
“I just did what I could,’’ Hayne continued. “That’s the whole point.
“That’s what we do when we get an opportunity.
“And it was good to get that first game out of the way. Especially with that silly error by myself.

“It’s ‘okay, first game is done. Move forward’.”
While Hayne may be a rookie in the NFL, he boasts years in the cauldron that is NRL, Origin and Test football. And the 27-year-old agreed that it was “maturity” that helped him bounce back from the fumble.
“Just being mature about it and knowing there was nothing I could do,’’ he continued.
“Obviously I was disappointed with making an error but you just have to keep your head up and go forward.
“The punt just got caught in the wind.
“The wind was behind (Minnesota Vikings kicker Jeff Locke) at the start and I thought I had a read on it.
“Then it kicked again, rotated again and it kind of sat still. It wasn’t coming towards me as I’d anticipated.
“When it sat still it put me between them and the ball ... I was trying to make a play but it wasn’t meant to be.”
And as for what head coach Jim Tomsula told him?
“He said don’t worry about it,’’ Hayne shrugs. “He said ‘next play, next play’ ... that’s how we roll.”
Tomsula praised Hayne’s ability to overcome the error immediately.
Asked about the fumble, the coach said: “We put him out there for the next two punts.
“He would have stayed out there all day. I mean, the next punt that came, went out of bounds.
“He didn’t have a chance to return it. And, the punt after that he did catch, he got 12-yards on it I believe.
“So, he got us a first down. He’s right back out there. So, I mean, there’s a belief and a faith there.
“Play football, OK? Let’s go back, own it, fix it and move on.”
