JUNIOR world sprint champion Courtney Field has had surgery after a nasty fall involving Australia’s Olympic flag-bearer Anna Meares left her with pieces of the track embedded in her leg.

The young cycling starlet, who has her eyes set on the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018, said she was competing in a kieren event at the International Track Series at Darebin International Sports Centre last month when she was bumped by the two-time Olympic gold medallist as the pair jostled for position.

“She wanted my spot and she just knocked me a little bit hard and she just pushed me off.

“It’s my first year, she knows I’ve come up out of the junior ranks.

“She’s just been like ‘I’m not going to let her win easily’.

“It’s just racing I guess, but she is just so much better, she could have left me more space.”

Field said she already had one bout of surgery to remove the splinters, but another was discovered by her doctor yesterday, after she felt pain.

“I’ve just hit the track at a really funny angle,” Field, 19, said.

“I’ve hit the track really hard and it’s gone through my skin, it’s really unusual, you normally get little tiny things, but never this bad.”

“Wood from track broke off and went into my leg.”

Field became the junior world sprint champion in 2014 and is a four-time world silver medallist and holds five junior Australian records.

Right now, the Berwick cyclists just wants to get back on the bike, but she has her sights set on the upcoming world titles, with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Tokyo Olympics in 2020 on the horizon.

“I was on a 2020 Tokyo camp a few months ago,” she said

“Definitely the Commonwealth Games is what I would like to go for, but I also some world cups coming up after the Olympics.”
