Australian schools rugby day 2: What Australian schoolboys, Barbarians selectors want to see, results

National schoolboys and Barbarians spots will remain open until the last match of the Australian schools rugby titles. But what do selectors want to see from players and who’s in the final?

Three Australian teams will be named at the Australian schools rugby championships.

Australian schoolboys coach Mark Moxon said teens competing at the Australian schools rugby championships can force their way into both his and the Barbarians squads right up until the final match of the tournament being played in Sydney today.

Moxon said a team of five selectors will be monitoring all players until the last final today to fill the two squads to take on each other and a touring Tongan side in September.

After a first day of blowouts and numerous upsets at the famous tournament, Moxon said selectors had preliminary talks with coaches and will now watch each teams final matches closely before naming two squads of 23 players on Thursday.

“I think each team was feeling their way, but there is plenty of talent,’’ Moxon said.

“There is definitely talent and there’s a lot to play for over the next few days.

“I think there’s talent around the loose forwards … we have some bigs who are hard on the ball and across the teams ever team has someone putting their hand up.

“There’s a broad scope, no dominant team in the forwards and backs.”

Moxon said he and selectors know what they want to see over the final days of the tournament before the team is named.

“They have right until the death,’’ he said.

“What I want to see is hard grinding football. Tonga will be a physical encounter. So we will need to be aggressive and physical. There’s no room for poor defence.

“I’d like to see they’re up to the challenge in the forwards and backs and our defence needs to be rock solid and we have to place smart.

“So what I’m looking for is physicality, good defence and a bit of X-factor. Smart footballer, who can assess the situation. Sometimes it will be better not to take them on physically.
