The win means the Magpies cannot be beaten for the title despite the final round of the Cup in Adelaide next weekend.

It was a tough fight between the two sides through the opening three quarters, but the impressive endurance of the Magpies came to the fore as they found another gear in the last.

Japanese international Adachi Seiya finished the game with four goals, well supported by Magpies skipper Nathan Power with a hattrick.

Seiya’s Japanese teammate Kiyamu Date was the best for the Mariners with four goals of his own.

The Fremantle Marlins have cemented their spot in the Australian Water Polo League top three ahead of the final round of the KAP7 Cup in Adelaide next weekend.

The Western Australian side were dominant on the defensive end as they closed out a spirited effort from the UNSW Wests Killer Whales in a 12-5 win.

In a powerful performance up front Jess Zimmerman finished with four goals for the Marlins while the experienced Zoe Arancini found the back of the net three times.

But the big moments belonged to goal keeper Lilian Hedges who proved why she is one of the competition’s premier players between the sticks.

UNSW Wests men have enjoyed a tough trip through the Wild West, but will face a stern test before they can come home.

The Magpies were unstoppable on Friday night, downing UWA Torpedoes in their home pool.

But on Sunday afternoon they face a Fremantle Mariners side riding high after being the team to cut short Sydney Uni’s undefeated run through the KAP7 Cup.

Both sides are evenly matched, with a smattering of exciting overseas talent set to light up the action in the KAP7 Cup.

Before the men’s action gets underway, Fremantle Marlins women’s side will play host to the UNSW Wests Killer Whales.

The Marlins have been impressive across the KAP7 Cup, and will be determined to lock away the four points and their spot in the top three.

Sydney Uni Lions’ undefeated run in the men’s Australian Water Polo League is over - but it was a close call.

Down 12-7 against a Fremantle Mariners side that got three goals each from Canadian star Ronen Grosz and Japanese sharpshooter Kiyomu Date, things looked bleak.

They rallied though in the final quarter with goals from Loui Schuler, Ryan Goldschmidt, Keegan Wicken and Thomas Harris getting them to within one goal at 12-11 with 30 seconds to go.

They couldn’t complete the comeback but the late surge showed they are very much in contention for the title.

FRIDAY GAMES

UNSW step up to topple Torpedoes

UNSW Magpies have shown city rivals Sydney Uni Lions how to win in the wild west with an impressive 8-7 Australian Water Polo League men’s victory over UWA Torpedoes on Friday night.

The unbeaten Magpies and Lions are both in Western Australia this weekend as they look to end the first stage of the competition on a high note.

The Magpies, who have now won seven and drawn two of their nine games, were indebted to three goals from Japanese sharpshooter Seiya Adachi and two from captain Nathan Power in the tense victory. They back up on Sunday afternoon (AEDT) against Fremantle Marlins.

UWA got three goals from Jonas De Oliveira Crivella but have now lost back-to-back games at home and could be in danger of missing the final six if they lose again.

The Lions play on Saturday night against Fremantle before facing UWA Torpedoes on Sunday.

Earlier, the UWA Torpedoes women’s side virtually ended the top six hopes of the UNSW Killerwhales with a narrow 7-5 success. Bronwen Knox scored four for UWA while Killerwhales star Kiara Holden took her season goal tally to 32 with a hat-trick.

The penultimate KAP7 Cup round, which starts in Western Australia on Friday, couldn‘t be more pivotal, with eight teams still alive in both the men’s and women’s competition looking for a coveted top six finish.

For the high-flying Sydney Uni Lions and UNSW Wests Magpies men’s teams, their passage to the next stage of the Australian Water Polo League is secure - and that will come as a relief ahead of a big road trip to the wild west this weekend.

The Magpies feature twice on the KommunityTV LIVE STREAM on Friday (UWA Torpedoes) and Sunday (Mariners). The Lions play on Saturday (Mariners).

Unbeaten Magpies have won six and drawn two so far, but star player Nathan Power knows his side must step up to keep third-placed Torpedoes and fifth-place Mariners at bay.

“They’ll both present as very good, well-rounded teams and they’ll have become stronger given that the games will be played in Perth,” he said.

“So I’m anticipating two very equally tough games.”

Power has been pleased with his team’s progress so far and has high hopes for the rest of the tournament.

“We‘ve sort of been able to grow into the tournament,” he said.

“To see how our team’s been progressing so rapidly across this first little period has been encouraging.”

Power said the dynamic of the team has continued to improve since the initial rounds despite the mix of experienced and new players.

“It’s just the team growing now, and harmonising with that great level of experience across the board,” he said.

“It’s been really encouraging for us.”

The team flies out on Thursday ahead of their first gam, though Power doesn’t believe the travel and time difference will be detrimental to the players.

“If we all travel with the right mindset, none of those factors should matter for us.

“I think as long as everyone is ready and prepared to play hard, we’ll be fine.”

The Magpies are placed well for their hopes of securing a spot in the top six, which would see them compete in the AWL Championship for a spot in the finals series.
