It’s three from three for the impressive Cronulla Sharks men’s team after they took down Drummoyne Devils 12-8 in an entertaining Australian Water Polo League encounter.

The Sharks, who beat Balmain and Hunter in their opening two games, led 6-3 at the main break, but the Devils found their form in the third quarter, outscoring them 3-1.

Drummoyne, in fact, drew level at 7-7 early in the final quarter before Cronulla recovered with four unanswered goals - two to Nicholas Brooks - to sew the match up.

Tristan Glanznig scored three for the victors while Sam Slobodien grabbed a double for the Devils.

Meanwhile, Cronulla’s women’s team maintained their unbeaten start - but only just.

The Sharks, who drew their opening game against Balmain before thrashing Hunter, were trailling Drummoyne Devils 11-10 with less than two minutes remaining before goals from Karli Canale and Joanne Whitehorn settled the nerves.

Daniela Jackovich and Jade Vinson scored three goals each while Morgan Baxter grabbed three for the Devils, including two in the final quarter as the two sides went goal-for-goal in an exciting finale.

The Sharks now face two huge games against Sydney rivals Sydney Uni and UNSW before hitting the road for the long trip to Western Australia.

The Devils next head north to Newcastle next weekend as they search for their first win of the season.

Sydney Uni prove too strong for Tigers

Sydney University are unbeaten after the opening two rounds of the Australian Water Polo League following a clean sweep of UTS Balmain Tigers on Saturday.

After a draw with Drummoyne on Friday, the men’s team opened their win account for the season with a three-goal success over the Tigers.

The Lionesses are two from two after their come-from-behind 12-10 win. It followed on their 17-11 success over the Devils 24 hours earlier.

The Tigers opened the women’s match well thanks to Katie Dudley, who scored three of their first four goals, and they actually kept a disjointed Lionesses side scoreless in the first quarter.

Maud Megens brought new life to the Lionesses, scoring three in the penultimate quarter to put Sydney Uni ahead for the first time all game.

Megens also produced a crucial block in the final period to keep her side in front.

Though the Tigers attempted lots of shots their inaccuracy proved decisive.

The Sydney Uni men’s team prevailed 12-9 over the Tigers in a tight affair.

The Lions were firing straight away, setting up a comfortable 4-1 lead in the first quarter and extending it to 6-3 heading into the second half.

However, the Tigers came back in the third period with a vengeance, and managed to draw level at 7-7 following three unanswered goals.

The match was full of fouls and exclusions, with Toby Goldschmidt, Josef Schuler and Goran Tomasevic all fouling out and UTS coach Nathan Thomas copping a yellow card.

It was Sydney Uni’s strong defence that proved the difference, forcing UTS to fumble opportunities.

Goals galore as UNSW start with a bang

UNSW flexed their Australian Water Polo League muscles with big wins in both the men’s and women’s clashes KAP7 Cup against Hunter Hurricanes on Friday.

The Killerwhales started the day in great style, grabbing a 15-goal victory before the defending champion Magpies overcame a resilient Hunter Hurricanes 18-9 to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

The Magpies struggled early and the Hurricanes would have been two goals up early in the second quarter if it weren’t for Japanese import Katsuyuki Tanamura, who was a standout in goal saving two penalty shots, including one he conceded due to a foul in the second quarter.

His countryman, Adachi Seiya, was one of the top scorers for the Magpies, contributing five along with Angus Lambie.

Keenan Marsden attempted to bring the Hurricanes back in it with four goals, but his side were unable to claw back the deficit.

Both sides had strong defences, resulting in multiple shot clock expirations, however the Magpies were stronger on the counter-attack which resulted from it.

Meanwhile, the Killerwhales cruised to an 18-3 win over Hunter Hurricanes.

The girls were unstoppable from the first whistle, setting up a 9-2 lead heading into the second half before pouring in seven goals in the penultimate quarter.

Kiara Holden put on a strong showing, scoring six goals, including back-to-back shots in the second quarter.

The Hurricanes were unable to capitalise on most chances gained by exclusions, however Amali Jarrett ensured the hosts weren’t kept goalless in the second half after Nancy Lee received an exclusion.

Antonia Poore was also strong in goals for UNSW in the fourth quarter, pulling off some stunning saves while also initiating the counter attack.
