Water polo livestream: What selectors want to see at Water Polo National State Championships Boys

The best young water polo players in the country have taken over the pool at Olympic Park. See who went home with the gold and watch all the REPLAYS from the week.

New South Wales made it a golden double at the Water Polo Australia national state championships in Sydney winning the 17 and Under and 15 and Under national titles.

In the 17 and Under grand final NSW Blues defeated New Zealand by four goals despite a scoreless period.

The Blues started the match strongly to take a 4–1 lead into the break.

By halftime they had extended their jump to 7-1.

But a scoreless third-quarter allowed the New Zealanders back in the game before the Blues recovered to run out 11–7 winners

Zac Izzard scored three goals for NSW with Nathan Gladman and Tadija Pribakovic both scoring two.

Pribakovic said the NSW team started “a bit down” but showed great improvement as the tournament went on.

“I think teamwork and communication, and our defence was the key for us,” he said.

“We are all really good friends. Half the team come from the same club (Sydney University) and we always want to play for each other.

“We love each other and we appreciate each other.”

NSW also tasted success in the 15&U boys competition with their grand final victory over the Queensland Maroons on Friday.

A five-goal purple patch in the third period set up the NSW Blues 10-8 victory.

Savo Todic was one of the stars for the host state with three sensational goals.

Dylan Jennison and Oliver Moncur contributed three goals each to the Queensland scoreline.

Two squads of 30 teenagers will be named at the conclusion of the 15&U and 17&U Boys Water Pole State Nationals, with the specific goal of building towards success at these two Olympic Games.

The main focus for Australia is to be winning medals at the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

“This can put you on the radar,’’ Aussie water polo performance manager Charles Turner said.

“It is really important to get noticed, so we can give them the opportunity.

“We want to select our next generation, and for us LA, and, in particular, Brisbane are very important .This is the age group we would expect them (Olympic players) to come from.

“This is their opportunity to stamp their authority. For them to be seen.

“A lot of our energy is on success at LA on the way, and then Brisbane.’’

Turner said up to 30 teenagers will be selected post the tournament in Sydney.

“We recognise the importance of getting the players into the national program now and putting a lot of energy into those programs.’’

Turner said the sport is always on the lookout for physically big teenagers.

“We have protocols around what we are looking for,’’ he said.

“Swimming speed, size, those sorts of things.

“It’s is a big man’s event this sport, so we need athletes who are physically capable.

“But that doesn’t rule out the small ones, but it is harder. They have to have something really special.

“Like football, you can only have a couple of halfbacks in the team and generally those are the ones with X factor.’’
