Tom Roach has continued to defy the odds.

When he was born premature at 29 weeks gestation, his parents were told his hopes of survival were slim.

They were also told that due to his cerebral palsy diagnosis he’d never be able to walk on his own.

Except, somebody forgot to tell Tom.

He remained in a walking frame until he was seven but defied all expectations.

This weekend, the 14-year-old will mark another exciting moment in his life when he competes at the Australian Little Athletics Championships, which you can watch live on KommunityTV.

The Kew Little Athletics Centre representative will compete in the under-15/16 multiclass discus and javelin events.

Despite his own battles in life, you’d do well to find a nicer athlete.

“Meeting new friends, being able to congratulate each other and aiming for PBs, which hopefully I’m going to get,” he said when asked what his goals for the weekend ahead were.

And you can expect he’ll be in strong form heading into the competition at Lakeside Stadium after a positive showing at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in Brisbane earlier this month.

Tom won a bronze in the javelin, finished fifth in the shot put after a personal best and came sixth in the discus.

The discus is his favourite event.

“It’s a love-hate relationship,” he said with contagious laughter.

“When I’m doing everything technically correct I can do quite well. I’m looking forward to competing again.”

Tom said it was an honour to represent Victoria again especially in front of his home crowd.
