The high-flying Drummoyne Devils were always expected to have the measure of their opponents in this double header, but nobody forecast these results. Watch the two replays in full.

A near full-strength Drummoyne Devils side has capitalised on its returning Aussie Sharks contingent to extend its unbeaten run to nine games as it chases its first ever Australian WPL title.

With quality in every position and remarkable depth, the competition frontrunners thumped the visiting Victoria Phoenix by 13 goals, cruising to a 21-8 victory.

With a perfect blend of experience and youth, this was truly water polo of the highest quality as the red-hot Devils hit overdrive.

It is little doubt they are going to feature heavily in this year’s finals series.

Tristan Glanznig’s all-round performance was the highlight of the night, along with his thunderous shots (five goals) at the cage.

But the rising star wasn’t alone, with brothers Blake (four goals) and Lachlan Edwards (three goals) giving the Devils plenty of firepower to spread out the workload.

Laurence Barker was another who was instrumental in the dominant win.

They look a frightening proposition at this stage of the competition.

Phoenix star Daniel Magasanik scored three goals in a commendable effort, but the visitors were no match.

A powerful display by young Victoria Phoenix goalkeeper Charlotte Cuthbert wasn’t enough to inspire a massive upset against red-hot favourite Drummoyne.

Held scoreless in the first quarter, the Devils women were made work much harder than they would have expected against the struggling Phoenix in a low-scoring affair.

Cuthbert was outstanding in front of the cage, repeatedly denying her more experienced and highly credentialed opponents.

It was only when Devils pair Macy Hansford and Jolie Marsden came to party in the third quarter that the pressure valve was finally released.

Lilli Harris was the Devils’ top scorer with three goals, while talented New Zealander Gabby MacDonald also found the back of the net.

Despite being held scoreless in the first quarter, Drummoyne’s cool heads and physical strength was always going to be a factor.

That, and with Phoenix tiring in the second half, meant the 9-4 result was a fair reflection of the divide between the two sides.

PREVIEW

After two weeks off to bask in the glow of their perfect start to the New Australian Water Polo League season, Drummoyne’s men’s team resume their chase for a first-ever title with four home games in four days this week.

Queensland Thunder are the opponents on Thursday and Friday before Daniel Magasanik and Victoria Phoenix visit for a double-header on Saturday and Sunday.

Considering both of those opponents are in the bottom four, it’s a big opportunity to take their winning streak into double figures.

One thing the Devils have shown over the last six weeks of action is a propensity to win the close games.

Three of their opening six wins have come by two goals or less.

And with Tristan Glanznig in the line-up, goals haven’t been a problem.

The 21-year-old led the goalscoring charts with 24 going into Thursday’s clash with the Thunder, including hauls of eight against Adelaide and six against Hunter.

Phoenix have a rising young goalscoring star of their own in Magasanik.

The sharpshooter, who is part of the 20 & U national age group program, has struck 16 times, including seven in the opening game goalfest against Cronulla.

Meanwhile, five wins in six games have ensconced the Devils women’s side as one of Sydney’s top title shots.

But two games straight after a break against second-placed Queensland Thunder are sure to be a great test of character.

The double-header against the Phoenix over the weekend is likely to be more comfortable.

The Victorian side have only passed double figures in goals once in their opening eight games.

The Devils began their season with four straight wins before falling 13-7 to Balmain.

They got back to winning ways against defending champions Sydney Uni Lions 10-8.

Brooke McClean scored three goals that day and has been the offensive powerhouse.

She has scored 16 goals in just five games.
