In previous editions of the TNL’s Launceston derby, it’s been the Cavaliers determined to make a statement against the Hawks.
But after losing three games in their quest for a fourth straight title, it’s the Hawks looking to prove they’re not yet a spent force in Friday night’s clash at the Silverdome.
The cross-town blockbuster will be available live and exclusive on KommunityTV with the action to kick off from 6:30pm with the 19&U clash.
The Opens will then follow at 8pm.
Still burning from last year’s grand final defeat, the Cavs have won all nine games thus far, with the Hawks (6-3) holding second spot on percentage over Kingston.
“We don’t go in taking any game for granted, although being undefeated is a good feeling to have,” Cavalier’s coach Katie O’Neill said.
“It doesn’t matter because the Hawks and Cavs is always a big game, and there’s always a big crowd. It is such a high pressure game and we’re looking forward to it to see where we’re at.”
The Cavs are seeking a better four-quarter display, despite winning the teams’ only meeting so far this season 54-26.
The Hawks led the round five clash by five goals at quarter time, but a dominant 17-5 third term set up the Cavs’ victory.
“It’s something we’ve really worked on the first couple of games, in the first quarter we haven’t valued our centre pass and game possession enough,” O’Neill said.
“We want to make sure we go short and sharp, work the ball to the circle edge and those types of things.”
The match is the last chance for players at TNL to press their claims for Tasmania Wild selection.
Trials will be held over the weekend, with the team selected announced on Sunday.
After opting not to play in last year’s national titles, the Wild will compete in the Super Netball Reserves finals weekend against sides in the second half of the ladder.
They will also hold a ‘play-in’ tournament against ACT and Northern Territory to determine seeding.
O’Neill, the senior assistant coach of Tasmania’s under-17 squad at the recent national championship, says the tournament will give players a chance to impress Super Netball franchises.
O’Neill’s daughter, Cavaliers defender Paige, was one of four Tasmanians named in 17&U and 19&U national pathway squads, alongside Hawks twins Sophie and Isabella Sherriff, and South-East Suns’ Amber Brown.
Sophie was named joint 17 and under MVP at the national championships.
“Any next level competition the girls can get (with the Wild) is awesome,” O’Neill said.
“We play one week at nationals where we play the best athletes around the county, we get used to it for a week and then don’t have it for another 12 months.
“To have any of these extra weeks where the girls can play at the next level is beneficial for them.
“There’ll be lots of people there watching that week, and they’ll also know where the girls are at in their stage of life.
“For a lot of those girls who might make the Wild squad, they are probably at a good stage of their life if they did get an offer, it’s probably the perfect time for them to move for that opportunity next year.”
The Cavs will hold its fourth annual Pregnancy and Infancy Awareness Round this Friday night.
The initiative will help raise money for Launceston General Hospital’s takila nayri room, where bereaved parents spend their final precious moments with their babies.
“The Cavs are so invested in it because we have a couple of past players who have been in that situation so it hits home a bit for the Cavs family,” O’Neill said.
“It always brings me to tears before the game starts when someone gets up to relay their experience.
“They’re looking to raise money for the space at LGH, so bereaved parents don’t have to be in a room with live babies when theirs has just passed away.
“They can have a nice space where they can take some photos and create memories.”
