Matrics birthday girl Lucy Voyvodic celebrated in style, spearheading a strong ??-goal win over fourth-place Garville.

The versatile Voydovic was brilliant in wing defence, turning the match around with her work off the ball in the second quarter, before taking over the centre bib for the second half.

With veteran Tyler Orr rested from the clash, and Sophie Casey benched after the main break, it was an opportunity for the 19-year-old that she wasn’t going to pass up.

Voyvodic combined brilliantly with star wing attack Georgia Dent as the Matrics side ran away with a comprehensive 54-37 win.

The Matrics side, determined to put last week’s loss to ladder leaders Contax behind them, would have thought their demons were following them after a shocking eight-goal opening term.

But champion teams don’t stay down on the canvas.

With veteran shooter Lucy Reynolds (32 goals from 38 attempts) coming alive in the second quarter, the Matrics side proved they were far from a spent force with a 20-goal second term.

The 15-goal win in the second quarter, which included stifling the attacking efforts of Brooke Irlam and Eliza Grenvold, turned the match and it appeared almost over by the halftime break.

With Voyvodic moving to the centre circle, Olivia Dent was given an extended taste of the Premier League, and in a special moment for the Matrics side, linked up with sister Georgia in a successful attacking raid.

The win has widened the gap to Garville in fourth spot, while Matrics have maintained pace with rivals South Adelaide who celebrated a milestone match for Jess Paradiso with a big win over Tango.

Paradiso celebrated her 250th Premier League game with a typically dominant performance as the Panthers ran out 54-34 winners.

Garville dropped the game to South Adelaide 54-45 last week, but, despite missing some players to Super Netball reserves, coach Kirsty Leonard-Down remained confident her side could take it to Matrics.

“There are areas for us to improve on, specifically being able to put four quarters together with a squad which has been through a lot of rotation,” she said.

“We’ve got some obvious changes we’ll need to make to personnel throughout the game, but so does Matrics, so it’s going to be about preparing for those as best we can and players coming in and stepping up.”

Garville is right in the mix for a top two spot, sitting just four points below Contax and South Adelaide with six games remaining.

Leonard-Down said her side are definitely not too far back to make a run.

“The top four is really tight and it’s going to be an interesting last six rounds,” she said.

“As a group, we know we’re still a chance for top two, and we believe we’re just a small step away of nailing a consistent four quarters each week and putting ourselves in that position.”

Matrics, who lost to modern rival Contax 53-39 last week, currently sit third, just two points below the top two.

Coach Amanda Shattock said this week’s game would tell her side a lot about its potential.

“We definitely looked at the positives and also the areas we can improve on after last game,” she said.

“Garville deserves a top four spot at the moment and we know they’re going to provide another really tough test for us.

“We’re really confident we can perform at our best and get a hard win this week. We’re looking forward to seeing where we sit against a side like Garville.”

Matrics will clash with fifth place Oakdale and South Adelaide after Friday night’s game in what will be a challenging run-in.

Shattock had full confidence her players could finish high on the ladder and compete for another title.

“We know we can go deep,” she said.

“We believe in our processes, so hopefully we can get a good win this week and then back it up against Oakdale and South Adelaide.

“I believe we’ve got a side which can compete with anyone.”
