A dominant South Adelaide has marched to a confidence-restoring 67-41 victory against the Newton Jaguars in their round 6 Netball SA Premier League encounter on Friday night.

It was a comprehensive performance from a competition heavyweight circling in uncharted waters towards the bottom of the table, as they registered only their second win of the season at Netball SA Stadium.

The Jaguars were always up against it and their task was made even more difficult when goal shooter Amber Zalupka went off with a knee complaint just before halftime.

The young outfit simply didn’t have the firepower or experience to penetrate the steely South Adelaide defence, and too much lateral movement often brought undone many attacking forays.

Ashleigh Bray was a brick wall and wing defence Bethany Lane did some smart things, while Alexandra Ward also enjoyed a strong game down back.

At the other end, goal attack and skipper Jessica Parasdiso was at her imperious best as she fired home 30 goals, while goal scorer Bianca Drum was sensational with a game-high 37.

For the Jaguars, Ashleigh Haigh finished with 19 goals and Ebony Schache did her part with 11 after coming on just before halftime to replace Zalupka, who had scored 11 up until her departure.

The young Jaguars produced some good passages of play early in the contest, but lost their direction in the second as South Adelaide rattled on 18 goals to skip out to a 14-goal lead at the main break.

They did manage to stem the bled in the third, with the deficit only climbing out by two more.

But it was all South Adelaide in the final quarter as they banged on another 17 goals to win in a canter by 26 goals.

A solid second half was more than enough for South Adelaide to see off a spirited Newton Jaguars in their reserves contest.

With only two goals separating the teams at halttime, renewed vigor from South Adelaide saw them record a comfortable 56-39 victory.

PREVIEW

While they may be coming up against a South Adelaide side that includes former league MVP Jess Paradiso, an improving Newton Jaguars side is confident they can challenge one of the competition heavyweights in round 6.

The Jaguars went through the entire 2024 season without a win but achieved an early victory this year against Metro Jets.

And despite being on a four-game losing streak, they’ve produced some quality displays in the early part of the season.

They’ll have the chance to turn that into a second win when they face South Adelaide on Friday night with both the Premier and Reserves matches available live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 7pm.

One of the league’s youngest sides, Jaguars put up a strong fight against Matrics in round five, eventually losing 59-46.

Coach Lee-Anne Cummins said she was confident her players could build off of the positive performance and take it to the Panthers, who are fresh off of a two-goal win over Tango.

“We were actually pretty pleased with our performance against Matrics – it was the most competitive we’ve been against them during my time with the club,” Cummins said.

“I think we’ve got a lot of self belief out of that game and we now know we can match the intensity with the top teams.

“We had some really good defensive battles and our goalies shot the best they have all year so we want to take that momentum and confidence into the game this week.

“South Adelaide got their first win on the board last week so we know they’ll be keen to go back-to-back.”

While the Jaguars sit at just 1-4 after five rounds, the side has seen the continued development of key players such as Centre Sienna Burns and Goal Shooter Amber Zalupka.

Cummins believed her group was improving with experience each week and learning what it took to win games.

“There’s been some ups and downs but that is expected from such a young group and we’ve definitely been progressing.

“If you look at the experience of other teams, we’ve still got an evolving group.

“There is going to be some inconsistency but we know we just need to continue to gain some experience and eventually we’ll get some runs on the board.”
