Live stream: National state water polo 19 years and under men's titles crucial for rising stars (National U19 Championships)

It proved one step too far for New Zealand as NSW Blues produced an incredible first-half scoring blitz on their way to the 19&U men’s water polo nationals crown. Relive all the action.

NSW Blues are the 19 and under men’s champions after an incredible first quarter of water polo set up their rollicking win over a touring New Zealand youth side.

With pride on the line at home in Sydney, NSW claimed the gold medal with a 16-5 victory.

The win was set up in the first period where the NSW side smashed in seven unanswered goals.

Marcus Berehulak scored four goals in the opener before ending the match with six to his name.

Tristan Glanznig contributed five.

NSW captain Toby Goldschmidy said the key to his side’s success was not letting their early lead “go to our heads’’.

“We were up 7-0 but we treated it like it was 0-0 to keep playing with a high intensity,’’ he said.

Goldschmidy said match MVP Berehulak was a standout for NSW at the event along with goalie Laurence Barker.

“They were very influential but we had good team work and a good contribution from everyone,’’ he said.

Queensland 12 d Western Australia 11 (bronze medal playoff)

Queensland took third place, but Western Australia made them work for it.

A trio of Queenslanders fired in three goals each in Issac Kyle–Little, Marcus Moncur and Matthew Bonser.

Harrison Grattidge and Peter Bruce also scored three goals each for WA.

Queensland’s Max Culleton said he was delighted with the passion shown by his young side.

“We had a really young side, a few who couldn’t make it down for a variety of reasons, but we just wanted to give our best and we did that,’’ he said.

Youth Barbarians 7 d NSW Waratahs 4 (5th place playoff)

The Barbarians reversed a narrow preliminary round defeat to topple the Waratahs and grab fifth spot.

Beaten 9-8 just two days ago, the Barbarians ended their tournament in style, withLucas Young one of the stars with three goals. Owen Lilleyman scored two.

The Waratahs just couldn’t get their offensive going going and no-one scored more than one goal.

ACT/TAS 16 d Victoria 9 (7th place playoff)

Campbell Ellison scored four goals and three other players hit three as ACT/Tas finished their campaign on a positive note.

It was the second time in four days ACT/Tas had beaten Victoria convincingly. After a tough four days, the defeat consigned the Vics to last spot.

Hunter Wright, Lachlan Winterton and Mattia Bognolo notched three each for the victors while Merrick Imer was the star of the show for the Vics with three goals of his own.

Championship Preview: Young water polo talent out to make statement on national stage

Water Polo Australia coaches will be out in full force at the 19 years and under national state championships for males in Sydney later this week as the search continues for our champions of the future.

The crucial event for the rising stars of Australian water polo is being held at Pymble Ladies College and will be live streamed on KommunityTV, with 24 matches, including the medal playoffs, set to be shown across the four-day event.

Eight games will be shown on Friday starting at 9am (AEDT) before another eight on Saturday and four each on Sunday and Monday.

Water Polo Australia high-performance boss Charles Turner said the male tournament, and the female event being held in Melbourne at the same time, are vitally important for players.

Turner said the event will be used not only to keep a watchful eye on players already in the system but to identify new talent that has so far “flown under the radar’’ as new Aussie junior squads are formed.

The NSW Blues, Victoria, ACT/TAS and New Zealand are in group A.

Queensland, Western Australia, NSW Waratahs and a Youth Barbarians side are in group B.
