The Cathedral College showed plenty of spirit as they booked a berth in the Dolphins Challenge grand final.

They completed at close to 80 per cent in their 32-10 victory over Rockhampton Grammar at Rugby Park.

Coach Todd Hansen said it was a great performance from his team, which came out firing from the opening hooter.

He said their completion rate and their lack of errors proved the difference.

Second rower Mannix Busch and lock Doujon Kanak laid the platform as TCC piled on 22 unanswered points in the first half.

“Our first half was really good,” Hansen said.

“We continued on from what we did against Shalom last week, just as I’d asked of the boys.

“If we can continue on again from here and do the same against St Brendan’s in the final, we will certainly be competitive.”

Grammar breathed some life back into the contest when they scored two quick tries in the space of as many minutes to narrow the margin to 16 points in the second half.

But their revival was short-lived as TCC barged over for their sixth try to seal the result.

While defence has been the cornerstone of their campaign, it was St Brendan’s try-scoring flair on show as they stormed into the Dolphins Challenge grand final.

The Yeppoon outfit ran in eight unanswered tries in their 44-0 demolition of Bundaberg’s Shalom College, extending their unbeaten run in the schoolboys rugby league competition.

Left wing Cayden Hoare set the tone for the game, diving in out wide for the first try in just the third minute.

Shalom never gave up but they had no answer for the rampaging Brendan’s boys, who were scoring from all points on the field.

Fullback Kobe Oberhardt produced a best-on-ground performance, with his pulsating attack a feature in the win.

He played a decisive hand in what was one of the tries of the season so far.

Darting out of Brendan’s defensive end, he weaved his way down the left sideline before offloading to Harry Roebig for the team’s third, giving them an 18-0 lead at the break.

There was no let-up as Brendan’s crossed in the opening minute for the first of their five second-half tries.

Centre Noah Wright had some strong carries and several try assists, while forward Trae Commons was unstoppable through the middle.

St Brendan’s coach Dominic Draper said defence had underpinned his team’s impressive form in the regular season.

“We’ve worked well as a team and put in a lot of effort on our defence, which is something you need to do together,” he said.

“The boys have come together really well and they’re a talented bunch.

“We’ve taken our opportunities and tried to build on the things that we’re doing well.”

St Brendan’s got the better of Shalom in their Round 1 fixture but Draper said it was a closer contest than the scoreboard suggested.

“Their forward pack is big and they all play very tough,” he said.

“It’s going to be a challenge down the middle of the field and we’ll need to be on our game.”

Draper said his starting front rowers Cooper Stacpoole and Trae Commons had been huge in this campaign and, along with Jake Symes, had provided plenty of go-forward and laid a solid platform.

The halves pairing of Lockyer Hill and Morgan Hair were directing the team well and winger Noah Wright was finding the tryline regularly, as well as landing plenty of conversions.

Meanwhile, the kicking game of halfback Henry Villiers will be central to The Cathedral College’s bid for a grand final berth, according to coach Todd Hansen.

“It’s been really strong and hopefully we kick well against Grammar and keep the pressure on,” he said.

Hansen is hoping his players can replicate the style of play they produced in the second half of their 22-4 win over Shalom last week.

“We’ve improved steadily with each game but I’m expecting a really tight contest against Grammar - it’s at their home ground and they’ve beaten us once already,” he said.

“The key for us will be to compete on every play and complete our sets.”

Hansen said it was all about the team working together to get the results.

He knows for the result to go their way on Tuesday, TCC would have to contain Grammar’s fullback Cormack Werner, who was central to their attack and had been one of the competition’s best.

Hansen is confident his team can mix it with anyone.

“If we compete well and stick to our process, we give ourselves an opportunity to win,” he said.
